HVNP announces August programs
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park continues its tradition of sharing Hawaiian Culture and After Dark in the Park programs with the community and visitors throughout August.
The programs are free, but park entrance fees may apply.
Mark your calendars for these upcoming events:
c Hawaiian music, haku mele, and language experts Kenneth Makuakane, Kainanai Kahaunaele and Kaliko Trapp-Beamer offer a three-day “Haku Mele, a Hawaiian song-writing retreat” to create original Hawaiian compositions in small group sessions.
The retreat will run from Friday to Sunday at Kileaua Military Camp’s Koa Room. On Friday it will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday from 6:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

c Hawaii’s impressive heiau and Rapa Nui’s giant stone images are well-known around the world, but Eastern Polynesia is not the only place in the Pacific where islanders created monumental art and architecture.
Join Dave Tuggle, Ph.D., on an illustrated journey to the other side of the Pacific — the islands of Micronesia — and learn about the ancient, massive stonework of Palau and the limestone structures of the Marianas. The presentation begins at 7 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium.
c Join Park Ranger Keoki Wells as he shares the delight of playing the Hawaiian ukulele. Watch and learn to play a mele (song). The lessons are fun and easy for all ages. The class runs from 10 a.m. to noon at the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai.
c Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning falsetto singer and ukulele player Diana Aki will present a free concert Aug. 15 at the Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium.
Beloved by all generations, Aki has been entranced by Hawaii-an music since she was a child, and continues to enchant all who hear her. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the concert runs until 8 p.m.
c The United States Mint will feature Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on a commemorative 2012 quarter-dollar coin to be released Aug. 29 through the America the Beautiful Quarters Program.
Join U.S. Mint representatives and coin enthusiasts for an interactive presentation on American currency, and find out how long a quarter lasts, what it takes to engrave these special coins and more. The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium.
The August events are part of various ongoing Hawaii Volcanoes National Park programs including “Ike Hana Noeau” or “Experience the Skillful Work” workshops, the ongoing “After Dark in the Park” series, and “Na Leo Manu” or “Heavenly Voices” presentations.
Singles meet for
dinner Wednesday
The Kona Kupuna Singles Club meets for dinner at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Tante’s Restaurant in Kailua-Kona.

Masons meet
on Wednesday
The Kona Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons’ monthly meeting will be held on at the Kona Masonic Center in Kailua-Kona.
Preceding the meeting is a dinner at 6 p.m. The meeting follows at 7 p.m. Dessert will be available after the meeting.
All members of the craft residing or visiting in the Kona area are invited to attend both the dinner and meeting.

Cancer support group meets Thursday
You’ll Never Walk Alone cancer support group meets from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
Cancer survivors and co-survivors are invited to attend the group’s free meetings held the first and third Thursdays of each month.
