On Saturday, Evan Coutler scored 13 points to lead a balanced attack as St. Martin’s defeated the Vulcans in the final round of the four-team PacWest/GNAC Challenge Series played in Monmouth, Ore.

Senior Mychael Hearn scored a career-high 25 points to lead UH-Hilo (1-1). Chaminade (1-0) played host Western Oregon (0-1) in the late game.

Junior forward Brandon Thomas added 11 points and seven rebounds.

“We had a terrible start and didn’t shoot the ball well — and they did,” Vulcan coach Jeff Law said. “We kept fighting back but just couldn’t get over the hump. We might have been a little tired, but our second team played really well today.”
