Kealakehe’s boys soccer team succeeded in its season opener with one strong connection: Avery Hardie-Jordan to Scott Henderson.
Henderson tallied four goals and an assist, and Hardie-Jordan collected three goals and three assists as the host Waveriders defeated the Hawaii Academy of Arts & Science 9-0 in the season opener for both teams.
The Big Island Interscholastic Federation contest ended at halftime because of the league’s mercy rule.
Hardie-Jordan assisted on three of Henderson’s four goals for Kealakehe, which led 3-0 13 minutes into the match.
Marc Takahashi and Ariel Lima scored Kealakehe’s other two goals, while Keoni Yates, Nick Joersz, Tristan Aderinto, Logan Whitney and Daniel Caudell each contributed an assist.
Greyson Moore shut out Na Naia in goal.
c Makua Lani 5, Waiakea 1: Senior Elijah Lingenfelder scored three goals at Old Kona Airport Park, giving him five for the season at the Lions improved to 2-0.
Keawe Alapai and Alex Stevens also found the back of the net for Makua Lani.
The host team of Makua Lani could not identify Waiakea’s goal-scorer.
c Honokaa 8, Ka‘u 0: Senior Justin Warren had four goals and an assist, and senior Pedro Sanches added two goals for the host Dragons.
Senior Clayton Robinson (one assist) and sophomore Zechariah Ugalde also scored for two-time defending Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II state champion Honokaa (1-0), which led 3-0 at halftime.
Freshman Kyle Ohta and senior Tony Connors each had one assist, while senior Cassidy Dixon and junior Elzer Maltezo combined to shut out the Trojans (0-1).
c Christian Liberty 5, Parker 1: Nakaya Kerr scored twice, while Kekoa Mundo, Louis Moylan and Sequoya Kerr added a goal apiece as 2012 BIIF Division II runner-up Christian Liberty opened the season with a home victory.
Paul Gregg scored the lone goal for Parker (0-1).
c Keaau 3, Kohala 0: Matthew Shimabukuro scored two goals at Shipman Park, and Talon Ota also found the back of the net as the Cougars won their opener.
Justin Quesada shut out the Cowboys (0-2) in goal.

Girls
c Waiakea 3, Makua Lani 2: Sophomore Sabrina Scott scored a go-ahead goal in the 60th minute, and freshman Starcia Deponte added a much-needed insurance goal in the 78th for Waiakea at Old Kona Airport Park.
After senior Lauren Mabuni gave the Lions (1-1) an early lead with her fourth goal of the season in the 15th minute, junior Kylie Robertson tied the match for Waiakea (1-1) in the 30th.
Seconds after Deponte’s goal, Makua Lani senior Tiffany Nakamura capped the scoring with her third goal of the year.
c Hawaii Prep 3, Kamehameha-Hawaii 0: In a matchup of two Division II state tournament teams from a season ago, senior Jessica Benioni scored in the 39th and 48th minute, and senior Lauren Pries added a goal in the 71st minute for HPA in Waimea.
Junior Morgan Monahan blanked the Warriors in goal.
“We missed a few opportunities early, but we did not get frustrated,” Ka Makani coach Steve Perry said. “Kristiana Van Pernis played great in the back in the first half and saved us a few times. Emily Evans covered a lot of pitch in the middle for all 80 minutes, and Nanea Tavares played a very unselfish and smart game while being man-marked all game.”
c Honokaa 8, Ka‘u 0: Seniors Monica Carlos, Kelly Greenwell and Nikki Hale each scored two goals in the opener for both teams in Honokaa.
Junior Allie Shiraki and senior Daisha Acorda both tallied goals and assisted on scores for the Dragons. Sophomore
Nina Cardoza and freshman Tia Agdeppa added assists.
Junior Hailey Paglinawan and senior Kaiu Freitas-Lau shared goalkeeper duties in shutting out the Trojans.
c Keaau 5, Kohala 0: Shani Cosma netted a hat trick, and Naia Blackford scored twice as the Cougars won their season opener at Shipman Park.
Krisann Isomura and Avery Jarvis combined on the shutout of the Cowgirls (0-2).
c Kealakehe 12, Christian Liberty 0: Sophomore Lexie Cuaresma scored three goals, while sophomore Logan Harris had a goal and two assists for the host Waveriders, who improved to 2-0.
Sulley Schuster shut out the Canefire (0-2) in goal.
