Cast set for ‘Into the Woods Jr’
Aloha Performing Arts Company’s Aloha Teen Theatre has finalized the cast for its production of “Into the Woods Jr.” In Stephen Sondheim’s “cockeyed fairy tale,” favorite characters meet and interact on their journey through the woods as they seek true happiness. This show is directed by teen Sarah Rouse under the guidance of adult mentor Sue Boyum; choreography is by teen Nora Frank with mentor Lee Vinson.
The cast includes Miles Lugo as the Baker, Mia Kriebel-Bruno as the Baker’s Wife, Nora Frank as The Witch, Kristen Cole-Porter as Rapunzel, John Hulen as The Narrator, Madison Vetter as They Mysterious Man, Simon Ellis as Jack, Alicia Hicks as Jack’s Mother, Sarah Bellatti as Little Red, Tyler Savarese as The Wolf, Saffy Datta as Granny, Emily Dungate as Cinderella, Lexi Heywood as Florinda, Tyler Savarese as Lucinda, Julien Jean-Burch as Cinderella’s Father and the Steward, and Saffy Datta as Cinderella’s Mother and Step Mother.

The public is invited to meet Maui “eco-artist” Mckenna Hallett from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Elements in downtown Hawi. The owner of Currents — low-impact jewelry, Hallett has supplied Elements’ store owner Prakash Flynn with her “wearable found-object jewelry” for more than a decade. Saturday’s event includes a trunk show featuring Hallett’s creations.
“I am continually awed by Mckenna’s creativity and talent and the sense of fun in her jewelry,” Flynn said. “I love wearing and sharing her work. And we love telling people about her raw materials like car radiators, old appliances, scraps of metal from demolitions, and a variety of plumbing and electrical discards. She has amazing pieces and a huge following throughout the state and nation.”
Hallett said, “The jewelry is the vehicle that drives another very important story behind why I use found objects, and more importantly, why I use no fossil fuels during the construction of my line. No heat, solder, no welding, no power tools – I even converted a Singer sewing machine treadle and use it for all my sanding and grinding.”

Auditions for ‘Disney’s Aladdin Jr.’ slated for May 4, 5
Guest director Sue Boyum will hold auditions for “Disney’s Aladdin Jr.” at 10 a.m. May 4 and 4 p.m. May 5 at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. Other production team members include Lee Vinson as choreographer, Christy Aragon as producer, Robin O’Hara as assistant director and Tia Amafala as production assistant.
All roles are open, including Aladdin, Genie, Iago, Jafar, Jasmine, Magic Carpet, Razoul, Sultan, Narrators and Ensemble. Those who audition must be 18 or younger and have parental or guardian consent. Consent forms will be available at auditions. Prospective cast members will be expected to share a short piece of dialogue they will receive at auditions, learn and perform a short dance in small groups and come prepared to sing either “A Friend Like Me” or “A Whole New World” in small groups and alone. Scripts may be checked out at the APAC office by leaving a $10 deposit.
The production runs June 21 to 30. A read-through rehearsal is planned at 10 a.m. May 11. Regular rehearsals begin May 20. Most actors can expect to rehearse from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays, beginning May 20.

Volcano school fundraiser set April 27
The Volcano Village Artists Hui presents Artists in Action from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the art program at the Volcano School of Arts and Sciences public charter school.
Demonstrations will include wheel-thrown pottery and Japanese paste paper. Participants may attend hands-on classes — “The Art of Collage” and “Recycled Art: To Make and Take Home.” Students will sell artwork and homemade cookies. Samples of Volcano-grown teas will be available to taste; native plants will be sold.
Free event parking is available at Volcano Garden Arts. Lunch will be available for purchase at Cafe Ono.
Participating Artists Hui members will include Cynee Gillette-Wenner, Emily Herb, Dina Kageler, Elizabeth Miller, Ira Ono, Debra Serrao and Erik Wold, with guest artists Angie Baker and JoAnn Aguirre.
