Community college offers various agriculture courses
Hawaii Community College is offering agriculture classes for people with various horticultural interests and goals.
“Students of all ages can learn to build their own greenhouse, create an irrigation system, control pests like a pro, start a business and use hydroponics,” said HCC agriculture instructor Chris Jacobsen. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
An “AgCurious” information session is slated from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 15 in Building 388 on the Hilo campus for those interested in learning more about the courses and agriculture on Hawaii Island.
Students who complete the courses earn certificates of participation or professional development in farm management, sustainable production practices, irrigation repair and theory, integrated pest management, farm food safety or agriculture business management and marketing.
Classes begin May 30 and continue through October.

Kealakehe High
council meets to discuss election, more
The Kealakehe High School Community Council will meet from 5:15 to 7 p.m. May 16 in the school’s staff cafeteria dining room.
The group will discuss the 2014-15 council election results and the electronic use and early release policies.

Ressler accepted
into medical school
in Honolulu
Hualalai Academy senior Bowen Chapman Boyum Ressler is one of eight students selected statewide for the John A. Burns School of Medicine’s Doctor of Medicine Early Admissions Program. The selection recognizes his outstanding curricular achievements, community service and commitment to pursuing a medical degree.
The primary goal of the program is to increase the number of highly qualified state residents attending University of Hawaii Manoa’s John A. Burns School of Medicine. It prepares students to become exemplary physicians through a quality undergraduate education blending the arts and sciences, including applied sciences as engineering or medical technology.
Adrienne White, college counselor and teacher at Hualalai Academy said, “I am so proud and pleased for Bowen Ressler’s acceptance into the JABSOM. He is not only a highly motivated student, but also a well-rounded young man, committed to serving the Hawaii community for years to come.”

HPA presents Performing Arts Showcase Friday
Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s seventh-graders will present their Performing Arts Showcase at 7 p.m. Friday at the Gates Performing Arts Center in Waimea. The performance is free and open to the public.
The seventh-grade class project, directed by middle school music teacher Barbara Kopra, features short plays and a medley of songs from “Mamma Mia.” The plays include “Going Up,” “The Three Bears Versus Goldi Locks,” “Murder at Grantley Manor” and “Just Imagine.”
