The Kealakehe High School Community Council 2013 Sarah Rosenberg Memorial Foundation Scholarships have been awarded. Scholarships were presented in two categories: Kupono, Most Outstanding WaveRider and Lokomaikai, Most Charitable WaveRider. Student applicants are evaluated on academic achievements, school and community involvement for the Kupono award and on school and community involvement for Lokomaikai. Since 2001, the Council has awarded 64 students a total of $98,500.

The 2012-2013 scholarship recipients for Most Outstanding WaveRider are Luke van der Spoel, $2,000 and Mai Tsukamoto, $1,500. Most Charitable WaveRider scholarship awardees are Somer Mitchell, $2,000 and Almarine Kitchens, $1,500.

Van der Spoel will study biomedical engineering at Rice University; Tsukamoto will study international law in Japan; Mitchell will study communications at DePaul University; and Kitchens will pursue architecture.

Van der Spoel and Mitchell will speak during Kealakehe’s graduation ceremony May 25.
