Hawaii Gas is alerting customers about a scam involving impersonators acting as Hawaii Gas employees in an attempt to solicit money.
The company reports at least one instance where a customer was approached by a “Richard Koizumi,” who claimed to be a Hawaii Gas employee in the Kalihi, Oahu, area. The impersonator alerted the customer that Hawaii Gas would be upgrading and exchanging gas meters in their area. The impersonator proceeded to request a $1,000 cash deposit from the customer.
The company would like to remind the public that its employees wear an identification badge indicating they are Hawaii Gas employees. Employees also drive vehicles clearly branded with the Hawaii Gas logo.
Customers are reminded not to provide personal, confidential, or financial information to any unidentified individual, and to be cautious when responding to phone calls. Customers should report any suspicious activity to their respective county police department.
