The body of a man was found Friday evening 80 feet below a cliff at Kapanaia Beach in North Kohala, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. The Hawaii Police Department is now investigating the discovery.

A shoreline fisherman reported about 6:50 p.m. seeing a body on the rocky coastline area known as “Hapu” near Kapanaia Beach, according to the Hawaii Fire Department, which arrived at the scene, accessible only by four-wheel-drive vehicles, at 6:58 p.m. Upon their arrival, personnel confirmed finding a lifeless male body, estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old, 80 feet below on rocky shoreline.

According to the fire department, an unattended parked vehicle was also found in the area.

Fire department personnel waited while Hawaii Police Department officers completed their investigation before retrieving the body. Because of the area’s terrain, rescue personnel based in Kailua-Kona assisted in the recovery effort.

The man was taken to Kohala Hospital, according to the fire department, which stated the cause of death was unknown.
