Kealakehe football workouts ongoing
The Kealakehe football team’s Prepare to Succeed summer workouts are taking place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from to 3 to 6 p.m. through July 26 at the school’s baseball field.
Students must have completed Department of Education physical examination and parent consent forms on file with the school in order to participate.
Forms are available at Kealakehe’s attendance and main offices. Workouts also require students wearing cleats for outdoor activities and gym shoes for the weight room.

Firemen’s Fund Weekend July 20-21
The Firemen’s Fund Weekend will be held July 20-21 on the Kohala Coast.
On July 20, there will be a four-man scramble at the Hapuna Prince Golf Course. The registration fee is $125, and play begins at noon.
On July 21, there will be a biathlon at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area. The 400-meter swim and one-mile run will begin at 8 a.m., and the registration fee is $25.
Proceeds will benefit the Greg Cameron Firemen’s Fund, a nonprofit charitable foundation for employees of the Hawaii County Fire Department.

Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp in July
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, the Hawaii Police Department’s HI-PAL Program and the nonprofit Big Island All-Stars are sponsoring the inaugural Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp for boys and girls ages 9 to 17 set for July 31 through Aug. 3.
Named in honor of the former University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball coach who helped guide the various camps and clinics around the Big Island, the Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp will take place at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and other Hilo gyms.
Instruction and drills will be conducted throughout the day, and games will be played at night.
Players may register by July 15 for $60.
Late enrollment is $70. All enrollees will receive a camp shirt and a group photo.
Bill O’Rear, a former Vulcan star and a UH-Hilo Hall of Fame member, is the lead clinician. Various guest clinicians will be announced at a later date. Parks Director Clayton Honma will serve as the camp director.
Registration forms are available during normal business hours at the Parks and Recreation office located in Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Luau Hale at 799 Piilani Street in Hilo.
Make checks payable to the Big Island All-Stars and include the note “Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp.”

Mauna Loa time trial Saturday; other events
On Saturday, Hawaii Cycling Club will host its first Mauna Loa Training Time Trial.
This 17.5-mile trial with an elevation gain of 4,500 feet will start at the bottom of Mauna Loa Observatory Road and go up to the Mauna Loa Observatory parking lot.
The event starts at 8 a.m. with registration from 7 to 7:40 a.m. followed by a pre-race meeting at 7:50 a.m.
The HCC and the Queen Kaahumanu Tri Club also hold the First Tuesday Training Time Trials.
The dates for these training time trials this summer are Aug. 6 and Sept. 3. The 5.1-mile course runs from Kaiminani Drive north to the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery.
The start time is 7 a.m.

HIBT fishes
for volunteers
The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is looking for more than 50 volunteers to help with the running of the 54th annual tournament.
A variety of tournament support is needed, including Kailua Pier operations, the HIBT retail store and administration.
Each volunteer will receive an HIBT T-shirt and discounted parking for shift volunteers. Positions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
HIBT event headquarters, retail and tournament control will once again be anchored at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, located adjacent to Kailua Pier.
