It was raining golf balls Sunday at the Waikoloa Beach Resort’s Kings’ Course. Paradise Helicopters executed the drop of hundreds of golf balls during the 29th annual Mardi Gras Golf Tournament.

The ball drop is the brainchild of Tournament Director Herbert Roussel, who was looking for new ideas and fun promotions to raise money for the local American Cancer Society.

Participants purchased one golf ball for $10 or 12 for $100. Each of the balls were numbered and then loaded onto the helicopter. Then on Sunday, the helicopter hovered over the practice green and dropped all the balls. Winners were those whose balls landed in the hole or were closest to the pin. All the proceeds benefited the American Cancer Society.

“This is a great cause and we get to do something fun like hovering a helicopter a few hundred feet above the hole and try to get a hole in one,” said Paradise Helicopters President and CEO Calvin Dorn. — WHT
