begins play Oct. 17
The Kona Horseshoe Pitchers Club will start its eight-week fall sanctioned doubles league Oct. 17. All league games are played from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at the Palm Court horseshoe pits behind the tennis courts at Old Kona Airport Park. League fees are $5 per week. Biddy Basketball League begins Oct. 24
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation is hosting a Biddy Basketball League for 5- to-8-year-olds.
League play is scheduled for Oct. 24 to Nov. 25. Games begin at 5 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. Register by Oct. 18; call 327-3553 for more information.

IKL championships Nov. 2 in Kona
The Kona Branch of the International Karate League will host its ninth annual IKL Karate Championship from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.
IKL branches from Hilo, Paauilo, Honokaa, Waimea, North Kohala, Waikoloa, Captain Cook, Kailua-Kona, Kealakehe, Pahala, Keaau, Oahu and California will attend.
The tournament will feature competition in kata, forms; kumite, sparring; and kobudo, weaponry, for children, teenagers and adults.
The free tournament is open to the public.

Keiki Tri slated
for Oct. 19
The Hawaii Police Department’s Hawaii Isle Police Activities League and the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation are co-sponsoring the Keiki Triathlon Oct. 19 in Kailua-Kona.
The event is open to youth ages 7 through 14.
Nine- to 14-year-olds start the triathlon with a 100-yard swim at the Kona Community Aquatic Center, followed by a 3.2-mile bike ride and a 1-mile run within the Old Kona Airport Park complex.
Seven- and 8-year-olds race half those distances.

Beginner golf
classes for women
Golf professional Rob Wohlgemuth is offering a five-week series of beginner golf lessons for women at the Makalei Golf Club beginning Oct. 26.
Class meets from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturdays.

to benefit St. Jude
Domino’s Pizza in Waimea is sponsoring a benefit golf tournament for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital on Nov. 2 at Makalei Golf Club.
The tournament will be a four-person net scramble format, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
