Researchers from University of Hawaii at Manoa are seeking crew members for a new series of space exploration analog studies.
The studies will last four months, eight months and one year, with one study per year in 2014, 2015 and 2016, UH officials said. The upcoming missions will be conducted at the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation site, an isolated Mars-like environment at about the 8,200-foot elevation on Mauna Loa. Crew member participants will live in the same geodesic dome habitat that successfully supported a NASA-funded Mars food study that garnered national media attention earlier this year.
The new studies aim to test a hypothesis that group cohesion over the short term predicts team performance over the long term.
Applicants must be between 21 and 65 year old. They must be tobacco-free, able to pass a class-two flight physical examination, among other requirements. The deadline for applications is Nov. 1. Instructions for applicants are posted at hi-seas.org.

meeting Tuesday
The Kona Library Book Club meets at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai to discuss “The Woman Who Fell from the Sky” by Jennifer Steil. This is a memoir of a 37-year-old journalist who goes to Sanaa, Yemen, in 2006 to teach a three-week crash course in journalism to the reporters of the Yemen Observer and ends up staying for a year. Her time there changes the course of her life, and she meets a cast of characters. Light refreshments are served. New members are welcome.
The Book Club will meet in November to discuss “Fish Can Sing” by Halldor Laxness.
