Coffee berry borer workshop set for Mountain View

The University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resource’s Risk Management Hawaii program is conducting an informational workshop about the coffee berry borer from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Hilo Coffee Mill, 17-995 Volcano Road in Mountain View. The borer is a major production and financial risk that coffee growers on the Big Island have been battling since its arrival in 2010. The pest has been recently found in Hilo in the Amauulu area and in Waipio Valley.

CTAHR’s Coffee and Orchard Crops Extension agent, Andrea Kawabata, will teach farmers about integrated pest management of coffee berry borer, including the how tos — from preventing new borer introductions, field sanitation to monitoring. Integrated pest management is an approach of using a combination of practices that are environmentally friendly and effective at mitigating such problems as diseases and pests. Risk management and crop insurance policies available to growers for coffee and coffee trees will also be discussed. Hawaii Department of Agriculture representatives will be present to answer questions and to give an update on the pest situation.

There will be a talk-story session for questions and answers during and after the presentations.
