Soccer team holding fundraiser Friday
AYSO Region 527-U10 Girls Extra Team is holding a fundraiser for its trip to the AYSO National Games in Riverside, Calif. The pancake breakfast will be from 6 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Kona Coast Shopping Center food court on Palani Road. The plate includes four pancakes, two slices of Spam, water or juice for $5.
Beach cleanup, barbecue will honor Toyama
The Guy Toyama Memorial Fund will celebrate the first Guy Toyama Day with a beach cleanup and barbecue from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Wawaloli Beach Park at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority.
An aerial photo will be taken to commemorate the event. The Guy Toyama Memorial Fund was established earlier this year to commemorate the life of Guy Toyama, a Hawaii visionary and champion of sustainable business and renewable energy who died in November 2012.

Health programs offered in December
Kaiser Permanente Hawaii is offering the following free classes during December:
Child passenger safety technicians certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will be checking child and booster seats from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Waimea Women Infants &Children Clinic in Waimea Civic Center, 67-5189 Kumamalu St. This is free and open to the public. Appointments must be booked in advance by calling 933-4587.
Learn the signs of osteoporosis, risk factors, prevention and treatment strategies, and how nutrition and exercise can help strengthen bones from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Kaiser Permanente Kona Clinic or from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 10 at the Kaiser Permanente Hilo Clinic. The class is free. Registration is required, call 334-4400.
N. Kohala library offers holiday programs
Jewelry artist Sid Nakamoto will demonstrate a simple holiday jewelry design at 2 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. Monday. Materials and assistance will be provided for participants to create their own jewelry piece. Class size is limited. Call the library at 889-6655 to register for the afternoon or evening program.
A holiday music concert at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 9 will feature five Kohala musicians playing recorders, guitars and piano. This annual concert is coordinated by flute and recorder instructor Wendy Hindley.
As Christmas Eve anticipation heightens, children’s librarian Leilani Silver will present a family fun night at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 23. Children ages 4 to 9 and their families are invited to enjoy holiday stories, crafts and refreshments.
Admission is free and the entire family is invited to enjoy these holiday activities.

Tuesday Read Aloud Program focuses on Italy
The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will host a free, family Read Aloud Program from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.
The program will have an Italian theme. Authors Laura Guluzzy and Lisa Corker will present their writings, “Dinner of the Seven Fishes” and “Carmela,” exploring Italian traditions and the immigrant’s life in the early 20th century.
The Read Aloud Program is offered on the first Tuesday of each month of the school year. Participants will travel around the world and get their “passports” stamped each month as the group explores the world through reading. Parents must attend the program with their children.
