Donkey Mill Art Center plans holiday season

Donkey Mill Art Center will host live performances and family art activities for children and adults during the holidays. Handmade gifts will also be available for purchase in their gallery shop from Saturday through Jan. 15.

A benefit concert and silent auction 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Malulani Pavillion at Holualoa Inn will support the center’s mission to sustain valuable art educational programs in West Hawaii. No Hoku Hanohano Award nominated Hawaiian swing band Kahulanui will perform. Admission is $25 for adults and $12 for children. Seats are limited. Purchase tickets in advance at 322-3362.

The art center will also host a holiday holo holo from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 7. where attendees can shop thoughtful, hand-made gifts created by fine artists and make wrapping paper, ornaments and holiday cards. Admission is free and all ages are welcome.

Chamber music concert planned

The Friends of Chamber Music continue their series of concerts with classical chamber music by Ohrlando’s Chamber Ensemble at 6 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Hualalai Academy Bridge Building.

Musicians include Mary Collier from Kona on violin, Kathy Fraser from Waikoloa, on violoncello, and Ursula Hesse on harpsichord. The concert is dedicated to music from the Baroque period and the early Classical period called Rokoko. Music will include works by Handel, Gluck and Haydn. Admission is free, donations are appreciated.

Benefit concert broadcast live Dec. 15

Kokua For The Philippines, a benefit concert for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 15 on the Great Lawn at Hilton Hawaiian Village and broadcast live on local radio and television stations and via the Internet.

Proceeds from the phone bank and on-site gifts will be donated to the American Red Cross for disaster relief. Gifts designated to other nonprofit organizations supporting the relief effort also can be accepted and their contributions will be included in the overall event total.

Kona Music Society offers holiday concerts

Kona Music Society and Susan McCreary Duprey, artistic director, present “Joy to the World,” its 2013 holiday concert series. George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” will be performed at 7 p.m. Saturday at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea and at 5 p.m. Dec. 1 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. A free community concert, “Joy to the World,” will be performed at 4 p.m. Dec. 22 at the Old Kona Airport Park pavilion. For tickets, call 885-6868 or visit konamusicsociety.org.

Potters Guild holds holiday sale Dec. 7, 8

Kona Potters Guild will hold its annual holiday sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 7 and 8 in Honaunau.

The group uses Hawaiian inspired colors, textures and motifs with a variety of clays and techniques. Attendees can also taste Kona Coffee, macadamia nuts and brownies. The sale is held at Society for Kona’s Education and Art between mile marker 105 and 106 on Mamalahoa Highway. The studio will be open after the sale throughout December.

Ukulele exhibitor awards announced

Award winners of the ninth annual Big Island Ukulele Guild Handmade Instrument Exhibit are announced. The event was held in October at the Wailoa Art and Cultural Center. This year’s Artist Choice Award was presented to Woodley White’s no. 56 tenor ukulele and the People’s Choice Award was given to Crist Pung’s no. 37 tenor ukulele.
