Konawaena drill may impact traffic Friday

Ehunuikaimolino and Konawaena Middle and High schools will conduct their off-campus evacuation drill from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday. Students will cross the highway on their way to the elementary school. There will be police assistance but traffic may be impacted.

Palila celebrated Saturday at Imiloa

Mauna Kea’s remote high-elevation dry forest and its famous inhabitant, the palila, will be celebrated from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Imiloa Astronomy Center during Palila Palooza. The event will feature free entertainment, keiki crafts, guest speakers and a free screening of the film, “Struggle for Existence,” at 11 a.m. In addition, artwork from the Hawaii Nei art contest will be on display in the center’s main hallway through December.

A critically endangered forest bird, the palila is only found on Mauna Kea’s southwestern slopes above 6,700 feet.

Kona Masons to install new officers Saturday

The Kona Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons will install new officers at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kona Masonic Center. Dan Mille will be the master of the lodge; Ben Spencer, senior warden; Bob Brogan, junior warden; Bob Foerster, treasurer; and Lee Meyerson, secretary. Other men will take the positions to which they are appointed.

Following the installation, there will be a potluck luncheon at the Old Kona Airport Park pavilion 3. Members and friends are urged to attend the meeting.

Verizon Wireless offers free smartphone training

Verizon Wireless will host free workshops for Droid and Apple iPhone users this month at the Kona Commons store.

“Android: Getting Started” will review hardware functions, demonstrate email setup, and help users master device features from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday.

“Apple iOS 7: Getting Started” will show how to navigate the refined user interface and personalize devices with ringtones, wallpaper and apps. Participants will also learn how to use features like Siri, the camera, AirDrop and Touch ID. The class will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. Dec. 28.

Veterans meet Saturday afternoon

Woodworkers meeting Saturday

West Hawaii Woodturners, the local chapter of The American Association of Woodturners, meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the PacRim tempering building, 73-4260 Hulikoa Drive, one street north of Hina Lani Road, but before the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority. Turn at the Pine Tree Cafe and come most of the way up the hill. There will be a sign on the street. New members, guests and visitors are all welcome to attend. Bring a chair and lunch.
