Hazardous waste collection is Dec. 14
A household hazardous waste collection event is planned from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Kailua-Kona Recycling and Transfer Station in Kealakehe.
The event is for household-generated and self-hauled waste only. No business or farm waste and no electronic waste will be accepted.
Acceptable waste includes automotive fluids, used batteries, fluorescent lights and pesticides. For a more complete list, visit hawaiizerowaste.org.

Group seeks Christmas gifts for seniors
Auntie’s Angels-Big Island seeks gifts that can be given to seniors at Hualalai Elderly Housing during a Celebrate Seniors Christmas Luncheon Sunday. PanchoMan Kuanoni and Boy Kawohi Kamaka will provide entertainment at the event.

Meditation class offered Sunday
The public is invited to experience the teachings of Buddha and practice meditation from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus. The class is free and everyone is welcome. Those attending should dress warmly and bring a cushion.

Hospital auxiliary board meets Monday
The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary board meets at 1 p.m. Monday in the hospital conference room. Visitors are welcome to attend.
Also, the auxiliary hosts a bake sale from 7 to 9 a.m. Fridays in the hospital cafeteria.

Cancer retreat begins Monday
“Touched by Cancer,” a program for people who have just been diagnosed, in the middle of treatment or been through treatment and are now trying to identify ways to rekindle their spirit and live with passion, purpose, meaning and joy, is the topic of a Kokolulu Farm and Cancer Retreat from Monday through Friday. Participants will learn new self healing tools have been affective with cancer.

Forest restoration event planned
The Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park hosts its next volunteer forest restoration project from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday. The group will plant native tree seedlings on the Mauna Loa strip section of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Volunteers should be at least 12 years old, and be able to hike at least 1 mile over uneven terrain through brush in an area with a moderate slope. Sturdy walking shoes and long pants are required, along with gear for variable weather conditions plus drinking water and lunch.
In addition, volunteers must scrub the soles of their shoes prior to arrival on-site, in order to ensure outside dirt and invasive species seeds are not tracked in.
Registration is required. All participants will need to sign a release form and a park volunteer form. For those younger than 18, an adult will need to co-sign. If it is too heavy or the park is closed, the project will be canceled.
Kona Soroptimists meeting Monday
Soroptimist International of Kona, supporting programs for women and children, will hold its first meeting of the 2013-14 season at 5 p.m. Monday at the West Hawaii Civic Center in the Community Hale, Building G. Light refreshments will be served. New members are welcome.

Mitchell completes basic combat training
Army Spec. Kirk P. Mitchell has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition, core values and physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, drill and ceremony and field training exercises.
Mitchell is the son of Aaron and Patrick Mitchell of Kailua-Kona. He is a 2001 graduate of Granite Hills High School, El Cajon., Calif.
