Club collecting toys for foster children
The Kona Ballroom Dance Club is again collecting toys and donations for children in foster care that have been removed from their home and are without family during the holidays. Toys are needed for more than 200 children. Financial donations are needed to purchase supplies for children that have been moved to foster homes or temporary placements, often only with the clothes they are wearing.
Unwrapped presents for children ages 1 through 17 can be dropped off at the clulb dance from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Kona Elks Lodge in Kailua-Kona.

Class helps dieters resist forbidden foods
Summer Eggleston will teach a technique to help dieters resist foods that sabotage weight loss efforts at 10 a.m. Jan. 4 at Kuakini Plaza South, 77-6400 Nalani St., Suite 200.
The psychological technique utilizes acupressure meridians to help a person resist urges and cravings. While some favorite forbidden foods will be provided to practice the technique, participants may bring their own food for practice.

Library program to celebrate Queen Liliuokalani
A free, statewide library program celebrating the legacy of Queen Liliuokalani will be offered at several Big Island libraries in January.
The 45-minute program is suitable for ages 12 and older and will feature readings of Liliuokalani’s work, a sing-along of her music and a brief talk story moderated by members of the Iolani Guild of the Episcopal Church in Hawaii.

Quilt Show planned in February in Waimea
Hawaiian and American quilts will be on display during Ka Hui Kapa Apana O Waimea’s Festival of Quilt Show 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 1 at Kahilu Theatre. The event will also include a craft fair and help for those who would like to start creating their own quilt. Materials will be provided. Admission is free, donations are appreciated.

Kona Brewers Festival slated in March
The 19th annual Kona Brewers Festival will offer beers from 40 of the country’s best breweries served alongside cuisine from 40 Hawaii chefs from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. March 8 on the beach and luau grounds at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
The fundraising event began as an anniversary celebration for Kona Brewing Company. The festival grew each year as did the number of charities supported by the event, and today more than 2,000 people attend with tickets often selling out within a week. Tickets are $75 and include a commemorative event mug, 10 four-ounce brew sample pours, unlimited samplings of gourmet cuisine and entertainment. Tickets are available for purchase online late January at the event website for a $5 fee.
The Kona Brewers Festival main event is the culmination of a multi-day celebration that includes a pairing dinner and benefit art auction on March 6 at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay; a charity golf tournament on March 7; and the Run for Hops race March 8. The Kona Brewers Festival Homebrew Competition is also held.
