A pair of amateurs had their way during the opening round of the Hawaii State Open.
David Fink fired a 4-under 67 on Friday at Manua Lani Resort’s South Course for one-shot lead over Shawn Lu.
The group at 70 included defending champion Dean Wilson, who has a PGA Tour win on his resume. Also at 2-under were fellow pros Max Bonk, a Hawaii Prep graduate, and former University of Hawaii at Hilo golfer Nick Mason.
In senior play, Jay Taise and Jeff Coston each carded 67s and were two shots ahead of defending champion Kevin Hayashi, a Hiloan who is a member of the Hawaii Golf Hall of Fame.
On the North Course, pro Mari Chun‘s 74 was one shot better than Aneka Seumanutafa, while Wedemeyer Au (79) led A Flight by two strokes.
Three groups of golfers are scheduled to finish up their first rounds at 6:30 a.m. today. The men’s second round tees of at 6:40 a.m., with the women at 7:30 a.m.
