Mick Fanning won his third ASP World Title on Saturday at the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons on the North Shore of Oahu.

In Round 5, Fanning, of Coolangatta, Australia, scored 9.50 points (out of a possible 10) to defeat C.J. Hobgood of the United States with a heat total of 12 points (out of 20).

In the quarterfinals, Fanning scored a 9.70 for a total of 17.03 points to beat fellow Aussie Yadin Nicol.

In reaching the semifinals, Fanning earned enough points to capture the world title. The 32-year-old also won in 2007 and 2009.

Billabong Pipe Masters

Kelly Slater of Coco Beach, Fla., clinched his seventh Billabong Pipe Masters title by defeating John John Florence of Haleiwa, Oahu.

Florence’s consistent performance throughout the three events of this year’s Vans Triple Crown of Surfing earned him the Triple Crown title. He ousted newly crowned world champion Fanning in the semifinals.
