Codependent men’s group meets today

A new Co-dependents Anonymous men’s meeting will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday starting this week at Access Capabilities, 74-5583 Pawai Place, Suite B-125. The 12-step fellowship is for those whose common purpose is recovery from codependence and the development of healthy relationships.

Youth sailing camp offered on winter break

Big Island Sailing Foundation and Kona Sailing Club Junior Sailors will hold a four-day youth sailing camp Dec. 26, 27, 30 and 31 at Honokohau Harbor. Land and water activities will be offered each day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Participants should be at least 12 years old or experienced sailors more than 10 years old. Attendees must be able to swim and be comfortable on a boat and in the water. Fee for the camp is $100 for Kona Sailing Club juniors, new members are welcome. The membership fee is an additional $20. Scholarships are available.

Cancer support group meets Thursday

You’ll Never Walk Alone cancer support group meets from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Cancer survivors and co-survivors are invited to attend the free meeting. Meetings are held on the first and third Thursday of each month. Light refreshments are served.

Whale watching program planned

The public is invited to Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site from 9 a.m. to noon Friday for a kick-off event of this year’s whale watching season. The public is invited to join staff and volunteers from the National Park Service, Hawaii Pacific Parks Association and Hawaii National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. A presentation about humpback whales will be offered from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

Weekly whale watches are scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon every Friday from Dec. 27 to March 28 at Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site.

Kona Hiking Club plans Pololu Valley trek

Kona Hiking Club will hike the Pololu Valley Awini Trail on Saturday.

Participants should meet at 8:15 a.m. at the parking area at Pololu Valley and be prepared for a wet, muddy trail. The hike is a moderately difficult 4- to 5-mile trek for fit hikers who can handle climbing down and up a series of near vertical ropes that descend into Honokane Nui Valley. Gloves are required and long pants recommended.

Kickball tournament organizers collect toys

Polynesian Roots Development LLC, Kaeo Hawaii and Kona Brewing Co. have partnered to host the first Kona Kickball Classic Saturday at the Old Kona Airport Park.

To participate in the adult, co-ed tournament, team members are required to donate at the tournament a new, unwrapped toy that will be given to a local family in need. Toys may also be donated at Big Island Running Co. in Coconut Grove Marketplace and in Hale Kui Plaza, or at Kaeo Hawaii tattoo, art and apparel shop on Mamalahoa Highway above Matsuyama Food Mart.
