Maurice Baysa

Maurice Kaonohiokala Baysa, 77, of Arizona died Dec. 3, 2013, at the Hospice of the Valley-North Sun City PCU. He was born in Hilo.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Dec. 17 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stake Center, 1373 Kilauea Ave., Hilo, for a 10:30 a.m. service. Burial follows at noon at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 in Hilo.

He is survived by wife, Helene Baysa; sons, Mark Baysa; daughters, Toni (Micheal) Spears, Lee (Geoffery) Fasoldt; brother, John Baysa Jr.; sisters, Joyce Kelekolio, Merney Baysa, Marylynn Soaladaop; seven grandchildren; numerous extended family members.

Solange Kokubun

Solange A. Kokubun, 86, of Papaikou died Dec. 14, 2013, at her home. Born in Paris, she was a homemaker.

Friends may call at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 19 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 8 a.m. service. Burial follows at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No 2. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by son, Glenn (Evelyn) Kokubun of Keaau; daughters, Roxane Hoshide of Papaikou, Asa (James) McCarthy of North Carolina; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Tana Basa

Tana Hecht Basa, 73, of Hilo died Dec. 6, 2013, at the Queen’s Medical Center. Born in Berlin, she was a retired registered nurse, former director of nursing at the Ka‘u Hospital, employed in the Medical Records Department at the Hilo Medical Center, member of Chabad of Hawaii and a holocaust survivor.

A graveside service will take place at noon Dec. 20 at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Family requests casual attire be worn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

She is survived by husband, Juanito Basa of Hilo; daughters, Kari (Conley) Gali of St. George, Utah, Eliza (Randy) Talavera of Mililani, Oahu; sister, Erika Mendelsohn of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five grandchildren.

Lily Kuroyama

Lily Yuriko Kuroyama, 65, of Hilo died Dec. 7, 2013, at the Queen’s Medical Center. Born July 24, 1948, in Hilo, she was retired from Waiakea Intermediate School as a teacher and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, Buddhist Women’s Association (Fujinkai), East Hawaii Hiroshima Kenjin Kai, Fukuoka Kenjin Kai and Kumamoto Doshi Kai.

Friends may call at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 20 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 5 p.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by husband, Gary Kuroyama of Hilo; daughters, Mari (Andy) Kuroyama-Ton of Honolulu, Joni (Brad Nakanishi) Kuroyama of San Francisco; brothers, Ronald (Yoshiko) Nakatsu of Pearl City, Oahu, Miles (Janice) Nakatsu of Hilo; sister, Doreen (Tom) Yamamoto of Mililani, Oahu; numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Alfredo Orita

Alfredo “Fred” “Papa” Orita, 79, of Halaula, Kohala, died Dec. 2, 2013, in North Kohala. Born Dec. 22, 1933, in North Kohala, he was a retired cook for Mauna Lani Beach Club, retired meat cutter for K. Takata Store and M. Nakahara Store, former chairman for the Hawaii County Planning Commission, foreman for the former Kohala Sugar Co., baker at Holy’s Bakery, foreman and maintenance supervisor for Kohala Nursery, troup leader for the Boy Scouts of America West Hawaii, former member of the Hawaii Army National Guard and member of Hawi Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. Dec. 20 at his residence in Kohala, 53-4233 Akoni Pule Highway, for an all-night vigil. Friends may again call at 8 a.m. Dec. 21 at the Hawi Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. Cremation follows. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by companion, Rachel Hiraoka of Halaula; daughters, Bobbi (Benjamin Cabang Jr.) Akana, Caroline Orita, Debbie (Randy) Caravalho, all of Halaula, Teresa (Christopher Santiago) Orita and Valerie (Randall) Carpio, both of Hawi; stepdaughter, Darilyn (Terry) Fuelles of Aiea, Oahu; stepsons, Clinton Hiraoka of Halaula, Lance (Monique) Hiraoka of Niulii, Myles (Tia) Hiraoka of Waimea; sister, Marcelina (Leo) Campbell of Kalapana; brother, Phil (Gay) Orita of Missouri; 27 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one uncle; numerous nieces and nephews.

Philip Wimbish

Philip Anthony Wimbish, 67, died Dec. 10, 2013. Born Dec. 4, 1946, in Ann Arbor, Mich., he worked as a resort manager, and was a former campaign manager for Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 20 at the Old Kona Airport Park Makaeo Events Pavilion for a service.

He is survived by sons, Keola Wimbish of Kailua-Kona, Philip Wimbish Jr. of Phoenix, Malkum (Shayna) Muhammad of Oahu, Devon Wimbish of Kansas City, Mo., Tommy Wimbish of Chandler, Ariz., James Cachero of Salem, Ore.; daughters, Mele Cachero-Wimbish of Kapaa, Kauai, Tanji (Kirk) Davis of Gardena, Calif., Felice Wimbish of Corona, Calif., Shaharah Wimbish of Los Angeles; brothers, Thomas Wimbish, Timothy Wimbish and Peter Wimbish all of Los Angeles; sisters, Donna Wimbish and Denise Wimbish, both of Atlanta; 27 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.

Genevieve Ah San

Genevieve Andrade Ah San, 97, of Honokaa died Dec. 13, 2013, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Ahualoa, she was a homemaker and member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. Dec. 21 at the Honokaa Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. service. Friends may call again at 10 a.m. Dec. 23 at Homelani Memorial Park for a committal service. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

She is survived by son, Lester Ah San of Honokaa; daughter, Sharon Marie Dodge of Oklahoma; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mitsuki Matsunaga

Mitsuki Matsunaga, 96, of Hilo died Dec. 5, 2013. Born in Hilo, he retired from Jas W. Glover Ltd. and farming and was a World War II veteran, recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal and member of the Big Island National Guard Retirees Association, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 6, Higashi Hongwanji Mission, Hilo Daijingu, Panaewa Kumiai and Kumamoto Doshi Kai.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Dec. 21 at the Higashi Hongwanji Mission for a 10 a.m. service.

He is survived by daughter, Lynnette Uyesato of Hilo; sister, Grace (Francis) Iwamoto of Kona; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Rosanna Matsuyama

Rosanna “Rosa” Mahiole Matsuyama, 62, of Keaukaha died Nov. 27, 2013, at Hospice of Hilo’s Pohai Malama facility. Born May 25, 1951, in Hilo, she was an administrative office coordinator for Kamehameha Schools CBECE-East Hawaii and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Keaukaha Ward, a captain of the University of Hawaii at Hilo Teachers Handicap Mixed League Bowling Team and Tropical Mix HGEA Mixed Bowling Team.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. Dec. 21 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hilo Stake Center, 1373 Kilauea Ave. for an 11:30 a.m. service. Burial follows at Homelani Memorial Park, Ilima Section. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by husband, Dennis Matsuyama of Keaukaha; daughters, Denise Kuuipo (Jonah) Kelekolio of Keaukaha, Kimi (Keoki) Brown of Waiakea Uka; son, Guy (Makala) Matsuyama of Keaukaha; brothers, Samuel Kamaki (Josephine) Mahi Sr. of Hilo, Davey Mahi and Darnell Mahi, both of Keaukaha; sisters, Maydean (Kimo) Bowman of Kapaau, Ilima Mahi of Waiehu, Maui; 11 grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
