HONOLULU — Anthony Drmic hit a 3-pointer from the left wing with 59 seconds remaining to help Boise State hold off Hawaii 62-61 in the last first-round game of the Diamond Head Classic on Sunday.
Drmic scored 21 points and made three of the Broncos (9-2) nine 3-pointers. They shot 50 percent (9 of 18) from behind the arc.
Brandon Spearman scored 17 points, Keith Shamburger 13 and Isaac Fotu 12 to lead the Rainbow Warriors (7-3).
Quincy Smith’s 3-point play with 1:37 to play tied it at 59 and Shamburger added a free throw to give Hawaii a one-point lead before Drmic hit the eventual game-winner.
The Broncos snapped a two-game losing streak and advanced to Monday’s semifinal round, where they will play South Carolina. The Rainbow Warriors, who had won their last five games, will play Saint Mary’s in a consolation game.
Akron 83, Oregon State 71
Demetrius Treadwell scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the first half and Nyles Evans added 17 points — including five 3-pointers — and Akron beat Oregon State.
The Zips (6-2) shot 44.8 percent from the field and 38.5 (10 of 26) behind the arc to pick up their sixth straight win. They have now won 28 of their last 33 games dating back to last season.
The Beavers (6-3), who entered the game ranked second (53.7 percent) in the nation in field goal percentage, shot 43.5 percent for the game to see their three-game win streak snapped.
No. 17 Iowa State 79, George Mason 67
Georges Niang scored 22 points for Iowa State for the Cyclones (9-0), who had their second-lowest scoring game of the season but still managed to extend their winning streak. Iowa State was one of 10 undefeated teams in Division I at the start of Sunday.
Three minutes into the second half, Niang stole the ball from Marko Gujanicic and his layup gave Iowa State its first 10-point lead at 40-30. After that, George Mason (5-5) pulled no closer than five points with 6:18 left.
Iowa State made just three of 14 3-point attempts in the first half (21 percent) but the Cyclones used a 10-2 run to avoid their worst half in any game this season.
South Carolina 78, Saint Mary’s (Cal) 71
Tyrone Johnson scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures as South Carolina handed the Gaels their first loss of the season.
Sindarius Thornwell scored 13 points, Laimonas Chatkevicius scored 12 points and Duane Notice added 11 for the Gamecocks (3-5).
Brad Waldow scored 20 points to lead the Gaels (9-1). Beau Levesque scored 15, Stephen Holt 14, and James Walker III had 13 in the loss.
