Pride of America visits Wednesday
The Pride of America will visit Kailua Village on Wednesday, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation.
Free yoga classes slated Wednesday
Big Island Yoga Center is offering three free yoga classes on Wednesday, starting at 8 a.m. with Pranayama, or breath work, followed at 10 a.m. by an active class and a noon class on restoratives. Those attending should wear comfortable shorts or tights and a T-shirt and be barefoot. It is best not to eat two hours before class and arrive 15 minutes early to register if a first-time student.

National park programs planned in January
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park continues its tradition of sharing Hawaiian culture and After Dark in the Park programs in January — which is also Volcano Awareness Month. All programs are free, but park entrance fees apply. A $2 donation helps support park programs.
The first program will be offered from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 7 at Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium. Tim Orr, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, will review highlights from the past 31 years of Kilauea’s eruption and talk about recent developments on the volcano’s east rift zone.
From 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 8 on the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai, Ab Kawainohoikalai Valencia and his wife, Puamaeole O’Mahoney, will teach traditional lei making.
HVO geologist Matt Patrick presents an update on Kilauea’s summit eruption, including an overview of the volcanic processes occurring within the vent, from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium.
Hawaiian falsetto singer Kai Hoopii presents a concert from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 15 at Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium.
Ben Gaddis, a long-time HVO volunteer, will tell the story of Kilauea volcano’s most violent eruption of the 20th century from the perspective of the people who lived through it from 7to 8 p.m. Jan. 21 at Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium.
Cyndy Leinani Martinez will share the traditional art of Hawaiian quilting from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 22 on the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai.
Finally, Jeff Sutton and Tamar Elias, HVO geochemists, will offer an update about volcanic gases, especially those related to the 2008-13 activity at Halemaumau Crater, and will talk about vog, how it forms and what’s been learned about its effects on the environment. An optional “gas-tasting” party will follow the talk. This program is scheduled from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 28 at Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium.
