Kealakehe Intermediate council to meet
Kealakehe Intermediate School Community Council meets at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the school’s library work room to discuss the 2014-15 academic plan and 2014-15 budget and master schedule issues.
The group will also address the need to fill remaining SCC vacancies — two community members are needed, in addition to one parent and one teacher.

Historic signs planned for Holualoa
Pulama ia Kona Heritage Preservation Council is beginning its 2014 campaign to create signs for almost 30 of the historic buildings along the Mamalahoa Kona Scenic Byway. The 10-mile stretch of winding road runs from the Palani Road junction at the north to the Honalo intersection of Kuakini Highway at the south. In 2009, Pulama established this section of Big Island roadway as the first recognized scenic byway in the state.
Pulama volunteers will research and interview building owners from the Komo Store to Keauhou Store to ensure accurate information is presented to residents and visitors. The 18-by-24-inch Sentra signs will feature old photos and information about the original buildings whenever possible and be UV coated for protection from the sun and weather. Signs will be designed, created and installed at no cost to the building owners.
Working with the Holualoa Village Association, Pulama will create signs for nearly two dozen buildings along the half-mile stretch of Mamalahoa Highway from the Imin Center to Holualoa School, giving visitors an educational walking tour of the historic coffee town that now features art galleries, shops and the Kona Hotel.
Fundraising for the project has begun with a $1,000 contribution from Young Brothers Ltd. The initial phase of the signage program is estimated to cost about $4,000 and public contributions are encouraged. Pulama ia Kona is an action arm of the Kona Historical Society and a 501(c)(3) organization. Tax-deductible donations via check should be made out to Pulama ia Kona and mailed to P.O.
