Fitness classes, activities for seniors scheduled

Hawaii County Elderly Recreation Services has scheduled a 10-week session of classes from Monday through March 14, excluding holidays, for adults 55 and older. Most registration fees are $10 per session and can be paid in advance at the West Hawaii Civic center or to the instructor on the first day of class.

West Hawaii classes available this session are:

• Line dancing, 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Waikoloa Community Church

• Line dancing, 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays at the Waimea Community Center

• Line dance aerobics, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays at Hale Halawai

• Deep water aerobics, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m Tuesdays or Thursdays beginning Jan. 14 at the Kona Community Aquatics Center

• Beginner adult swim lessons, 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays at Kona Community Aquatics Center

• Intermediate adult swim lessons, 10 to 10:45 a.m. Thursdays at Kona Community Aquatics Center

• Senior fitness classes, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Mondays at the Kona Aerial Gymnastics gym, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays at Hale Halawai, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursdays at Kona Daifukuji

• Senior yoga, 8:30 a.m. Mondays or Fridays at Hale Halawai. Cost is $5 per class.

• Chair yoga for seniors, 10 a.m. Mondays at Hale Halawai. Cost is $5 per class.

• Zumba Gold, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the West Hawaii Civic Center outdoor pavilion beginning Jan. 21

• Zumba Toning, 6 to 7 p.m. Fridays at the West Hawaii Civic Center outdoor pavilion beginning Jan. 24.

• New, beginner tai chi classes 8:30 a.m. Wednesdays at Painted Church

• Free pickleball games, equipment provided; 9 to 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at the outdoor basketball courts at Kekuaokalani Gym.

Bluegrass musician, paleoanthropologist featured at Words and Wine event

Two local authors will be highlighted at the monthly Words and Wine at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Kona Stories Book Shop. The free event introduces some of Kona’s favorite authors and offers pupu and wine.

Jack Tottle is an author, recording artist, composer, music producer and professor emeritus. His latest album, “The Eagle,” is an unusual collection of 14 new bluegrass songs and instrumental pieces.

Paleoanthropologist Hank Wesselman presents his book, “The Bowl of Light,” which provides a glimpse into the heart Hawaiian shamanism as he unveils teachings passed down from kahuna elder, Hale Makua.
