Tree recycling going on through Jan. 31
To help make the holidays greener, the county’s Solid Waste Division of the Department of Environmental Management will offer “treecycling.” Now through Jan. 31, residents can leave their Christmas trees in the designated areas — not in the rubbish chutes — at any of these county Solid Waste Division facilities in West Hawaii: West Hawaii Organics Facility at Puuanahulu, Kaauhuhu/Hawi, Kailua-Kona at Kealakehe, Keauhou, Keei, Puako, Waimea and Waiohinu. Attendants will direct the public to the proper drop-off point.
Trees should be free from all decorations, lights, tinsel and ornaments. Artificial and flocked trees are not accepted.
The county will also accept kadomatsu decorations, which are normally a combination of bamboo, pine and flowers, for recycling.

Codependent men’s meeting is Tuesday
A Co-dependents Anonymous men’s meeting is held from 6 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday at Access Capabilities, 74-5583 Pawai Place, Suite B125, Kailua-Kona. Senior ID cards to be issued
Coordinated Services for the Elderly will issue senior ID cards for people ages 60 and older at the following times and locations:
• From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kailua-Kona Walmart.
• From 9 to 10 a.m. Jan. 13 at Pahala Housing Center.
• From 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 13 at Naalehu Community Center.
• From 9 to 11 a.m. Jan. 13 at Kohala Coordinated Services for the Elderly (the old Bank of Hawaii building).
• From 9 to 11 a.m Jan. 14 at L. Yoshimatsu Senior Center, Waimea.
• From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 29 at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building B.

American Legion Post 20 meeting Wednesday
The American Legion Kona Post 20 meets at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122’s Veterans Center located at the makai end of Makala Boulevard in Kailua-Kona.
The VFW Auxiliary will serve a spaghetti dinner at 5 p.m. The dinner costs $10; cocktails are by donation.

Conservationist speaks at Kona Sunrise Rotary
U.S. Department of Agriculture District Conservationist Jessica Schmelz will speak to the Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise meeting at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday. She will discuss the Natural Resources Conservation Service that helps farmers implement conservation practices with both technical and financial assistance.
The Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise holds breakfast meetings at 6:45 a.m. every Wednesday at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona.
Hospitals’ affiliation on meeting agenda
A Waimea Community Association Town Meeting is slated from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Waimea School cafeteria. Discussions of Queen’s Health System’s affiliation with North Hawaii Hospital and preparations to support community projects during the 2014 state legislative session are planned.
First on the agenda will be an update by Queen’s Health Systems’ CEO Art Ushijima about the recently confirmed affiliation with NHCH, a partnership that has been strongly encouraged by many residents in the North Hawaii community during a recent series of well-attended public meetings.
A brief overview by state Sen. Malama Solomon and state Rep. Cindy Evans of the 2014 legislative session, which will begin Jan. 15, will be followed by a discussion of proposed community projects or concerns ranging from public education to agricultural self-reliance. Public infrastructure to recreational health/wellness facilities may also be discussed. Former Waimea State Rep. David Tarnas will review how to be an effective “citizen advocate.” This will include how to use the Legislature’s Public Access Room services and also the legislative website.
Also on the agenda will be the annual WCA election of officers.
Attendees are urged to either bring nonperishable food items or donations for the food pantry. Donations are tax deductible.
