Wellness Through Movement class begins Jan. 22
Catherine Rosasco-Mitchell leads a 15-session Wellness Through Movement “body-to-brain communication” class from 1:30 to 3:45 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 22 to May 14, at Kohala Elementary School. The program, for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, features movement games based on sensory motor learning related a child’s development in mental, physical and emotional well-being.

Waimea Country School open houses slated
Waimea Country School will hold admission open houses, for interested children and their families from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and Feb. 1. Faculty, students and parents will answer questions about the school’s fully accredited learning program and ohana atmosphere. Feb. 28 is the priority deadline for new applicants. The campus is located at St. James Circle inWaimea.

Parker School to host admissions open house
Parker School will hold an admissions open house from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Parents and students will have an opportunity to tour the campus, meet current Parker students, teachers and staff, and learn about the school’s academic and extracurricular programs and $8,500 per year scholarships for students in sixth through ninth grades.
Parker will hold a parents-only kindergarten and first-grade admissions preview from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday. Parents of future kindergartners and first-graders will see the program and teachers in action, explore classrooms and chat with teachers.
A sixth through ninth grades admissions preview is slated from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 16. Parents and students will be able to ask questions of teachers and administrators.

Kealakehe team competing at LifeSmarts state finals
A team from Kealakehe High School will participate in the LifeSmarts Hawaii Competition state finals Feb. 8 at the State Capitol Auditorium.
LifeSmarts is a consumer education competition that tests teens in sixth through 12th grades about personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology, and consumer rights and responsibilities.
The Kealakehe students will face off against a team from Farrington High School and two teams from Waipahu High School. The winners of the state finals will represent Hawaii at the National LifeSmarts Competition from April 26 to 29 in Orlando, Fla.
LifeSmarts Hawaii is sponsored by the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Office of the Securities Commissioner, in partnership with the Hawaii Credit Union League and the National Consumers League.

Students make OSU honor roll
Two West Hawaii residents made Oregon State University’s scholastic honor roll for fall 2013. To be on the honor roll, students must carry at least 12 graded hours of course work and have a grade point average of 3.5 or better.
Students on the honor roll include Taylor M. Kurashige of Holualoa, a freshman majoring in pre-apparel; and Michaela K. Byrnes of Honokaa, a freshman majoring in pre-athletic training.
Rotary scholarships deadline is Jan. 31
The Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation scholarships application process is underway and the deadline to apply is Jan. 31. A total of $245,000 in scholarship grants will be awarded in April with scholarship grants of $5,000 awarded to 45 students and two “outstanding students” who will receive one $10,000 Maurice J. Sullivan Scholar Award and one $10,000 Joanna Lau Sullivan Award.
All statewide high school seniors, as well as home-schooled senior students, may apply for the scholarship. The Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation was founded by Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan in 1976 and provides support with scholarship grants that assist Hawaii’s high school seniors in achieving their goal of attending college. Since 1976, 1,515 scholarship grants with a total value of $5,366,313 have been awarded to Hawaii high school seniors on all major islands.
