A wind advisory is in effect for Hawaii Island through 4 p.m. today.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu forecast northeast winds of 25 to 40 mph for the island. The service cautioned that the strong winds can bring down tree branches and make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

A wind advisory means that sustained winds of at least 30 mph or gusts of at least 50 mph are expected. Motorists are advised to use extra caution.
