Programs offered in Kahuku Unit

Free programs will introduce visitors to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s Kahuku Unit on select Sundays from January through March.

The public can learn about the vital role of ohia lehua in native Hawaiian forests, the many forms of the ohia tree and the lehua flower from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m Saturday, Feb. 9 and March 23. Those attending are asked to pack a lunch.

A guided hike of Palm Trail is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 19, Feb. 23 and March 16. The moderately difficult 2.6-mile loop traverses scenic pasture along an ancient cinder cone.

People and Land of Kahuku is a moderate 2-mile guided hike that loops through varied landscapes to explore the human history of Kahuku. The guided hike is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 26, Feb. 16 and March 9.

For all activities, enter Kahuku on the mauka side of Highway 11 near mile marker 70.5, and meet near the parking area. Sturdy footwear, water, raingear, sun protection and a snack are recommended.

Kona Coffee Farmers Association to meet

Kona Coffee Farmers Association will hold its eighth annual general membership meeting from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Kahaluu Beach Park pavilion. Beer and pupu will be served at noon. The meeting begins at 12:30 p.m. and is followed by a potluck lunch.

Everyone is encouraged to attend, hear summaries of the organization’s yearly activities and talk story with farmers. Current members will vote for board members.

Hospital auxiliary meets Monday

The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary board meets at 1 p.m. Monday in the hospital conference room. On the agenda are the annual membership meeting and nominations for 2014. Visitors are welcome to attend.

Everyone is invited to a bake sale from 7 to 9 a.m. Fridays in the hospital cafeteria.

Soroptimist club meets Monday

Soroptimist International of Kona meets at 5 p.m. Monday at the West Hawaii Civic Center, Community Hale, Building G. Bev Fraser, executive director of Friends of the Children of West Hawaii, will be the guest speaker.

AARP driving class offered Jan. 27

Kona Palisades Association is sponsoring an AARP Driver Safety Class at 1 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive.

“Smart Driver,” a revised and improved refresher class for older drivers that does not include driving or written tests, will be offered. It covers all of the subjects that may affect drivers as they age, such as hearing, eyesight, reflexes, safety rules, road rage, rules of the road, problems at intersections and drinking and driving with updated information geared toward the learning attitudes of older drivers.

Some automobile insurers offer a discount for completing the class.

Library book club meeting Tuesday

The Kona Library Book Club meets at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai. This month’s selection is “Flight Behavior” by Barbara Kingsolver. Light refreshments will be served.

The club will meet in February to discuss “Beautiful Ruins” by Jess Walker.
