offers book clubs
The Kona Stories fiction book club meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The group will discuss “Life Among Giants” by Bill Roorbach.
The nonfiction group meets at 6 p.m. Jan. 28 to discuss “Into Africa: The Epic Adventures of Stanley & Livingstone” by Martin Dugard.
No membership or fees are associated with these groups and monthly attendance is not required. Bring a pupu or beverage to share. Joining a book club helps members stay focused on a goal of reading one book a month and broadens their choices of reading materials.

Workshop offered for potential
court interpreters
The Hawaii State Judiciary is seeking individuals who speak English and another language to become court interpreters. Applications are now being accepted for an orientation workshop March 5 and 6 in Kona. The two-day workshop is one of the mandatory requirements to become a court interpreter for the Hawaii State Judiciary.
Registration deadline is Jan. 30. Registration forms are available on the Judiciary’s website and from the Office on Equality and Access to the Courts at 539-4860.
The workshop registration fee is $95. A grant from the Hawaii Women’s Legal Foundation and Hawaii Friends of Justice and Civic Education is being used to lower the cost from the original $120 fee.
Certified sign language interpreters are also encouraged to apply.
Court interpreters work on a freelance basis as independent contractors in cases when parties or witnesses are unable to hear, understand, speak or use English sufficiently. Depending on their performance on written and oral exams, court interpreters are paid between $25 to $55 per hour with a two-hour minimum.
Project Grad planning meeting held Tuesday
Project Grad will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Kealakehe High School library workroom. Leaders are still needed for a few committees. This is not a school event; help is appreciated from all community members.

MLK Jr. craft day for children is Wednesday
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will host a Martin Luther King Jr. craft day for children, ages 5 to 14, at the Kekuaokalani Gym from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
