Hawaii nature artist Patrick Ching will complete five oil paintings during the “Patrick Ching Painting Live” show from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Jan. 24 at Martin &MacArthur at the Kings’ Shops in Waikoloa.

Ching will be available to chat and offer tips on painting wildlife scenes. A reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 25. Aside from the original paintings, Ching will also have art prints, giclees and books he has written such as “Sea Turtles of Hawaii,” available for sale at the five-day painting show.

Although Ching has homes on Kauai and Oahu, he has deep ties to Hawaii Island. He has painted various Hawaii Island scenes including the Mauna Kea Observatory for the 1986 Hawaiian telephone book cover. Signed copies of the book cover will be given out free with each purchase of Ching’s art or books at the painting show.

Ching was a ranger for the U.S. Fish &Wildlife Service. He is devoted to preserving Hawaii’s native wildlife. Ching was selected to create Hawaii’s first Wildlife Conservation stamp and his works are in collections of the Smithsonian Museum in New York, Japan’s Princess Michiko, the Bishop Museum, and local celebrities including Kealii Reichel and Robert Cazimero.
