Traditional ulua fishing techniques demonstrated

Hauanio will share the wisdom and practice of early cliff-top fishing know as hang-baiting in his lecture “Kau Laau: Traditional Hawaiian Ulua Fishing Technique” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Keauhou Ballroom III at Sheraton Keauhou Resort &Spa at Keauhou Bay. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Friends of the Library-Waikoloa Region meets Friday
Friends of the Library-Waikoloa Region will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Friday in the Waikoloa Village Community Room. The group will vote on new offices and nominations will be taken from the floor. An update on the progress of the future Waikoloa library and a review 2013 activities will also be given.
Memberships may be renewed at the meeting or in advance. Membership forms are available in the Waikoloa Bookmobile and at library.waikoloacommunity.org.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie released the initial funding in 2013 for site evaluation, planning and design of a future library and the first of several meetings for community input was held in November.
The organization will celebrate its fifth anniversary in 2014. Its mission is to provide a learning resource center and an intergenerational gathering place via a transitional bookmobile until a permanent library facility can be built in Waikoloa.
Police plan Hamakua community meeting
The Hawaii Police Department will hold a community meeting from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the North Hawaii Education and Research Center in Honokaa.
The public will meet the department’s command staff and discuss police-related concerns with the police chief and commanders. Community meetings are rotated throughout the eight police districts on Hawaii Island. To help police commanders focus on specific community concerns, they ask that participation in this meeting be limited to those who live or work in Hamakua.
