Kaiser Permanente employees and other volunteers pitched in Monday at Kealakehe Intermediate School, where they helped create a garden.
The effort was part of the national day of volunteering. Typically, millions of people throughout the country spend the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday doing service projects in their communities.
For this work day, Kaiser partnered with the Hawaii Island School Garden Network, which is helping island schools build gardening and agricultural programs that will significantly contribute to increased consumption of locally produced food by involving students, their school communities and their family networks in food production.
Another site that got spruced up by Kaiser employees and other volunteers was The Malaai Culinary Garden at Waimea Middle School.
