Hawaii Preparatory Academy thrived behind the stellar guard play of Kalan Camero (16 points) and Justas Gecas (12) to
beat Keaau 53-48 on the road and clinch the top seed in the BIIF Division II tournament.
HPA (9-0) held on after a rocky third quarter in which its lead was trimmed from 16 to 6. Ka Makani can clinch a Hawaii High School Athletic Association tournament berth by winning one of its two remaining regular-season games
Led by Edgar Ventura’s 15 points, the Cougars (4-5) fell into a tie for fourth in Division I. Charlie Belmes finished with 14 points on four 3-pointers and Isiah Segobia had 13.
Keaau won the JV game 39-33.
Waiakea 59, St. Joseph 42
The host Warriors had 11 different scorers, including three with nine apiece, en route to their fourth straight victory.
Lucas St. George, Maikai Gahan and Noah Ferreira each had nine, and Calvin Mattos added seven. Waiakea (7-2) has all but clinched the No. 2 seed in the BIIF Division I playoffs.
Ben Uhlmann finished with 24 points for the Cardinals (0-8), who tallied 20 of their points in the fourth quarter.
Kohala 58, Konawaena 57, OT
Backed by balanced scoring and an energized home crowd — two of Kohala’s hallmarks — the Cowboys knocked Konawaena from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Ryan Caravalho scored 17 points as Kohala outlasted the Wildcats in a Big Island Interscholastic Federation boys basketball game that went to overtime in Kapaau.
There were just seven points scored in OT, two apiece by Kohala’s Justin Agbayani and Chance Pang. Mikala Jordan and Agbayani each finished with 11 for the Cowboys (7-2) and Shawn Ray Ramos posted 10.
Jonah Bredeson finished with 24 points for Konawaena (8-1), which still controls its destiny in Division I. Brandon Awa scored 16 and Cameron Howes added 10. Konawaena forced the extra session by outscoring Kohala 23-15 in the fourth quarter.
Kohala missed two free throws late in overtime, but the Wildcats’ desperation heave near the buzzer misfired.
Kamehameha 68, Hilo 66
Pukana Vincent led the way with 30 points for the visiting Warriors, who stopped a two-game losing streak.
Vincent scored 20 of his points in the middle quarters, but Kamehameha (5-4) trailed until surging ahead by outscoring Hilo 27-19 in the fourth. The Warriors took sole possession of third place in Division I, one game ahead of the Vikings and Keaau. Rylan Kiko added 10 points for Kamehameha.
Jalen Carvalho led Hilo (4-5) with 26 points, Austin Dante added 14 and EJ Narido had 11.
In JV, the Warriors won 63-52.
Pahoa 57, Honokaa 53
Tolby Saito’s 30 points powered the host Daggers to their third straight win.
Keinan Agonias contributed 12 points for Pahoa (4-5), which trailed by two points at halftime.
Wayne Vaoga scored 15 points for the Dragons (2-7), losers of four straight.
Honokaa controlled the JV game, winning 68-26.
