Senior IDs to be distributed this month
The Coordinated Services for the Elderly Program of the Hawaii County Elderly Activities Division will issue senior ID cards for seniors 60 years and older from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Kailua-Kona Kmart.
Staff will also issue cards from 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 10 at St. Jude’s Church in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates; 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 10, Kohala CSE building; 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 11, L. Yoshimatsu Senior Center, Waimea; 3 to 4 p.m. Feb. 24, Hale Hauoli Senior Center, Honokaa; and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 26, West Hawaii Civic Center, Building B, Kailua-Kona.

Center hosting Chinese New Year celebration
Kealakekua Ranch Center will celebrate Chinese New Year, the Year of the Horse, from 4 to 6 p.m. today. The event features traditional Chinese lion dancers with drums, gongs and small fireworks. Shops, restaurants and the supermarket will be running specials and hosting giveaways including food samples and free chair massage.

Visayan club raises $19K for typhoon victims
Local Filipino organization Kona Visayan Club raised a little more than $19,000 during its “Kokua for Philippines ” benefit concert and silent action on Nov. 28. About half of the group’s members come from the areas devastated by Typhoon Haiyan that ravaged the central Philippines on Nov. 8.
The money will be used for rehabilitation of destroyed schools and to support livelihood projects. The group has already funded and completed construction of two classrooms for the victims of Typhoon Washi (Sendong) that struck the Philippines in 2011.
Golf tourney funds ER construction
The sixth annual Kohala Hospital Charitable Foundation Golf Tournament will take place Feb. 15 at the Hapuna Golf Course. Sponsored by the Meinardus gamily and the Bitburger Brewery, 100 percent of all the money taken in will go directly to the Kohala Hospital Emergency Room Building Fund. The day includes Bitburger and Koestritzer beers and a buffet lunch at Arnie’s and is catered by the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Last year the foundation raised $ 36,000 from the tournament.
The construction of the ER is well underway. Contractors and the hospital’s management are planning a well-functioning emergency room, according to tournament organizers
