Pedro Quiocho

Pedro “Pete” T. Quiocho, 65, of Honokaa died Jan. 26, 2014, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born Feb. 25, 1948, in Haina, Honokaa, he was a retired Vietnam War Army and Army National Guard veteran, a steward for the Hilton Waikoloa Village and member of the Honokaa United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 003-Hilo, Big Island National Guard Retirees Association-Hilo, Big Island Military Association-Hilo, Disabled American Veterans Post 9-Puna, Veterans of Foreign Wars-Hilo, International Longshore Warehouse Union 142, and the Hamakua Saranay Club.

Friends may call at 4 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Honokaa United Methodist Church for a 5 p.m. wake service. An all-night vigil follows at the church. Friends may call again at 7:30 a.m. Feb. 6 at the church for a service. Burial will be at noon at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No.2. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Flora Quiocho of Honokaa; daughters, Florence Quiocho (Ruben) Wamil Jr. and Karen Quiocho (Lyle) Purgganan, both of Honokaa; sons, Gerald Quiocho, Peter Quiocho and Philip Quiocho, all of Honokaa; brother, Rudolfo (Miyako) Asuncion of Oahu; sisters, Violet (David) Dias of Paauilo, Marilyn (Boy) Calivoso of Kalopa; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Douglas Mercado Jr.

Douglas “Boysie” Fairbanks Mercado Jr., 53, died Jan. 20, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Aug. 19, 1960, in Honolulu, he was a drywall contractor and member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Feb. 6 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. service. Burial is at Alae Cemetery. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by son, Zachary (Senait) Mercado of Seattle; daughters, Tiana (Christian) Daligdig and Chelsie Mercado, both of Honolulu; mother, Felicidad Mercado of Hilo; brother, James (Leah) Mercado of Hilo; sisters, Belinda (Primo) Castro of Honolulu,Vannessa (Randy) Apele of Hilo; six grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Faith Louie

Faith Tsui Louie, 82, of Hilo died Jan. 14, 2014, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility. Born April 20, 1931, in Waimea, Kauai, she was a retired elementary school teacher for the state Department of Education and member of the Wainaku Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Hilo.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Feb. 7 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. service. An urn committal will be held at 9 a.m. Feb. 10 at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2, Secion C. Family requests casual attire be worn.’

She is survived by sons, James (Nanette Nishimura) Louie of Kaneohe, Oahu, Nathan (Deneen) Louie of Hilo; daughters, Patti Ann (Stephen) Cipro of Wailea, Maui, Stacy (Baba Lancaster) Louie of Hilo, Ashley (Byron) Rezents of Kula, Maui; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Rapsak Shorey

Rapsak Shorey, 34, of Keaau died Jan. 6, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Aug. 30, 1979, in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia, he was a former maintenance worker for the Arc of Hilo.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Feb. 7 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a service. A graveside committal service will be at 9 a.m. Feb. 8 at Alae Cemetery, Section K. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by parents, Kaspar and Yokunta Shorey of Pahoa; brothers, Bernabe (Janet) Shorey of Mountain View, Kasio Shorey of Hilo, Sunday Shorey of Massachusetts, Jeno Shorey of Pahoa; sisters, Sisincher (Adelino) Enicar, Bercy Shorey and Sinia Shorey, all of Pahoa, Shora Shorey of Hilo; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Winifred Batalona

Winifred Hauoli Batalona, 77, of Hilo died Jan. 1, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Jan. 12, 1936, in Hilo, she was a retired crew chief supervisor for Mac Farms of Hawaii.

Friends may call at 6 p.m. Feb. 7 at Hilo Church of God, 671-A Waianuenue Ave., for a 7 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 9 a.m. Feb. 8 at the church for a 10 a.m. service. Burial follows at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery no. 2 in Hilo. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by sons, Harry (Ened) Batalona and Ray (Jolynn) Batalona, both of Hilo; daughters, Leolani (Raiden Lagat) Oyama of Honolulu, Michele (Tevita) Talanoa and Mei-Li (Corey Fukushima) Ortiz, both of Hilo; brother, Clarence Kahele of Hilo; sisters, Stella Kahele, Gladis Decoito and Diana Kahele, all of Hilo; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Francis Shafer

Francis Lucky Shafer, 69, of Kailua-Kona died Jan. 23, 2014, at Kona Community Hospital. Born April 7, 1944, in Pago Pago, American Samoa, he was the owner of Lucky’s Concrete Pumping, a fourth-degree black belt kempo karate instructor, a professional musician, Konawaena High School football coach and a volunteer search and rescue member.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Feb. 8 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Second Ward in Kailua-Kona for an 11 a.m. service. Family requests aloha attire be worn and no flowers.

He is survived wife, Karen Shafer of Kailua-Kona; son, Lance (Sammie) Shafer of Kailua-Kona; daughter, Nanishell (Keahi) Shafer-Robins of Kailua-Kona; sisters, Marie (Richard) Munn of Central City, Neb., Margaret (Jerome) Pollard of Laie, Oahu, Patricia Malic of Las Vegas, Mary Peralta of San Diego; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Amy Matsukado

Amy Emiko Matsukado, 70, of Kurtistown died Jan. 19, 2014, at the Hale Nani Rehabilitation & Nursing Center on Oahu. Born in Kurtistown, she was a retired secretary with the state Department of Education and member of the Kurtistown Jodo Mission.

Friends may call at 3 p.m. Feb. 8 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 4 p.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

She is survived by sisters, Gayle (Gary) Yoshinaga and Wanda Matsukado, both of Mililani, Oahu; nieces, nephews and a grandnephew.

Martin Oliver

Martin Stanley Oliver, 70, of Hilo died Jan. 24, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center.

Born in McLennan, Alberta, he worked on the Canadian oil rigs prior to forming Porcine Aqua Inc. in Eaglesham, Alberta, was a real estate broker and proprietor of The Land Office Inc. in Laupahoehoe and Naalehu, former manager for the original Dairy Queen in Waimea, a pilot and member of the Hawaii Island Board of Realtors Association, Hilo Experimental Aircraft Association and Big Island Ballroom Dance Club.

Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 8 at Aunty Sally’s Luau Hale, at 755 Piilani St. in Hilo, for a celebration of life. Family requests aloha attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Violet Oliver of Hilo; son, Bryan (Sara) Oliver of Scottsdale, Ariz.; stepsons, Troy (Estelle) Cross of Clackamus, Ore., Anthony (Ashley) Ganir of Murphy, Texas, Larry (Chancey) Balbarino and Morgan Balbarino, both of Hilo; stepdaughter, Tracey (Efren) Salmo of Woodburn, Ore.; hanai sisters, Cindy (John) Clarke and Luci Patri, both of Alberta, Canada; hanai-brothers, Harold Potraz and Edward Potraz, both of Alberta, Canada; one grandson; numerous cousins and stepgrandchildren.
