Kamehameha’s girls soccer team watched the tape of its loss Saturday to Hawaii Preparatory Academy and identified the breakdowns.
Afterward, Warriors coach Sonya Ah Chong proclaimed her team “good to go.”
The Warriors proved her right Wednesday at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II tournament. Tiana Iwata and Sachi Iwata scored to lift Kamehameha to a 2-0 victory against Seabury Hall in the first round at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu.
“We controlled play,” Ah Chong said. “Many opportunities. On some, we just didn’t capitalize.”
Kamehameha (9-4-1), the three-time Big Island Interscholastic Federation runner-up, won its opening game at states for the first time since 2011, when it reached the semifinals. The Warriors face Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Kalaheo (6-6) at 3 p.m. today in the quarterfinals.
Coming off a 4-0 loss to Ka Makani in the BIIF finals, the Warriors made life easier for goalkeeper Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo against the Spartans (2-11).
“She didn’t have to face much,” Ah Chong said.
She said the hardest thing for the Warriors was adjusting to the muddy fields.
“It’s been so beautiful in Hilo lately,” Ah Chong said. “Here, we were slipping and sliding around.”
Kapaa 6, Honokaa 0
Eryka Keoho scored two early goals to sink the Dragons in a Division II first-round game.
Kanani Colburn, Emily Johnson, Stephanie Cram and Brooke Spencer also scored for the Warriors (6-5-2), the Kauai Interscholastic Federation runner-up.
Honokaa (5-8-1), the BIIF’s third-place team, will play Seabury Hall at 1 p.m. today in consolation play.
Kapaa faces top-seeded Mid-Pacific in a 3 p.m. quarterfinal today. In another 3 p.m. quarterfinal, No. 2 seed HPA, the BIIF champion, faces Leilehua (6-7) of the Oahu Interscholastic Association. The Mules bested OIA rival Nanakuli 2-0 in the first round.
Mililani 4, Hilo 0
Tia Furuta scored in the first half, and Kayla Braunthalm, Mariko Bebb and Dallas Minaya tacked on goals in the second half to deny the Vikings, the BIIF’s Division I runner-up.
Hilo (10-3-1) will play Castle (9-5) of the OIA at 1 p.m. today for the right to play in the seventh-place game. Kamehameha-Kapalama drilled the Knights 9-2.
Mililani (12-4) advances to the quarterfinals, where it will play OIA champ Pearl City at 5 p.m. today.
After a bye, BIIF champion Konawaena (10-2-1) opens in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. today against Aiea, an OIA team that defeated Kaiser 1-0 on Wednesday.
