Call goes out to photographers
The 15th annual Hawaii Photo Expo 2014, a juried photography exhibition by Big Island photographers, is accepting entries for this year’s show at Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center in Hilo. Digital entries are due March 16.
Hawaii Photo Expo is the premiere photography exhibition for Big Island photographers and the largest photographic contest in the state. The show runs from June 7 to 25. The expo offers an opportunity for students and novices, as well as established professionals, to showcase their best images. Wailoa center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and noon to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Admission is free.

‘Rusalka’ shown Saturday, Wednesday
“Rusalka” will be screened at 12:55 p.m. Saturday at Makalapua Cinemas. Rene Fleming sings “Song to the Moon” in Antonin Dvorak’s soulful opera. An encore broadcast is slated at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The Metropolitan Opera “Live in HD” series is presented by Regal Cinemas and Hoku Concert Series.

SKEA hosting fiber arts show Feb. 15, 16
Na Nani O Ka Aina “The Beauties of the Land” celebrates the natural beauty and wonders of Hawaii Island. A biannual quilt and fiber arts show at the Society for Kona’s Education and Art, this year’s event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 15 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 16.

Spielman teaching watercolor workshop
Annabel Spielman will teach a four-day watercolor workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 17, 18, 20 and 21 at the Kona Arts Center in Kainaliu.
Beginners and experienced painters are welcome. Spielman will demonstrate techniques to create texture using plastic wrap, splatter, miskit resist, sponge and cheese cloth. These techniques can be applied to landscape and ocean scenes, as well as flower studies. Instruction will also emphasize the basics of color mixing, composition and value patterns stressed in an atmosphere of positive encouragement.
Spielman is an experienced painter and working artist who loves to teach others to enjoy painting in watercolor. She has been showing in galleries since she came here in 1976. Lucky enough to call Kona, Maui and Kauai home at different times, she has explored Hawaii with paintbrush in hand.
Spielman pays attention to what students are doing and makes the rounds, offering advice. Gentle critique and review of paintings are ongoing.
