Foundation accepting grant applications
Hawaii Women’s Legal Foundation is accepting applications for its 2014 grant requests from organizations and projects that help to improve the legal status and welfare of women and children in Hawaii. The foundation considers grant applications twice a year in March and September. The deadline for receipt of grant applications for March consideration is March 7.
The foundation typically awards “micro” grants in amounts ranging from $500 to $5,000. It prefers not to award funds for operational expenses, and instead prefers to make awards on a project-by-project basis or as a means to “jump-start” an organization’s funding sources. Its primary criteria in considering funding applications include improving women and children’s access to the legal system; reducing child abuse; reducing domestic violence; reducing sexual abuse; increasing financial independence; and improving women and children’s health, education and welfare.

Arthritis seminar scheduled today
The Arthritis Foundation, in partnership with Hawaiian Electric Industries, is hosting a free arthritis educational seminar conducted by Dr. Dennis Boulware of Kaiser Permanente at 5 p.m. today at Kona Community Hospital’s conference room No. 2, 79-1019 Haukapila St., Kealakekua. Memorial service for veterans Friday
Marine Corps League Camp Tarawa Detachment is hosting a memorial service for veterans from the Big Island and the mainland at 10 a.m. Friday at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery. Anyone wishing to attend the service is welcome.
A no-host lunch follows at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122 at 74-5562 Makala Blvd. near the Old Kona Airport Park.
Mayor, Cabinet speaking Feb. 27
Mayor Billy Kenoi and select Cabinet members tackle current Hawaii County issues at the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce 2014 Focus Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
Sponsored by Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union, the annual luncheon offers an opportunity for the community to meet with county department representatives in a casual setting. Attendees will have the opportunity to have lunch with a specific department member, as well as pose questions to the mayor and other dabinet heads. Issues to be included in the discussion include the possible increase of the general excise tax via a county surcharge; the county’s solid waste management plan; the genetically modified organisms bill; and, the quest to reopen the Kona International Airport international arrivals facility.
