Plate lunch sale benefits food banks
As part of Central Pacific Bank’s 60th anniversary celebration, the bank is honoring its founders and thanking its customers with a “50 Cents Plate Lunch Sale.”
The sale will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday while supplies last at eight branches statewide, including Kailua-Kona and Hilo. Proceeds will be donated to the food banks on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.
In the early 1950s, a group of nisei World War II veterans had a dream of creating a bank to serve all of Hawaii’s people. Meeting regularly at Ala Moana Beach Park with their 50 cent plate lunches, Central Pacific Bank was conceived. The bank was founded 60 years ago on Feb. 15, 1954.
All-breed dog show is this weekend in Hilo
The Orchid Island Dog Fancier Club Inc. will host a three-day event of all-breed dog shows from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday through Monday at Edith Kanakaole Stadium in Hilo.
In recent years, more than 150 dogs representing 50 breeds have entered the event with many participants traveling from other islands – all competing for the coveted “Best In Show” title.

Woodturners meeting Saturday
West Hawaii Woodturners, the local chapter of The American Association of Woodturners, meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the PacRim tempering building, 73-4260 Hulikoa Drive in the Kaloko Industrial Area. New members, guests and visitors are welcome. Bring a chair and lunch.

Breakfast benefits Kealakehe seniors
The Kealakehe High School senior class of 2014 is hosting an all-you-can-eat pancake fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Hale Halawai. Tickets for $10 donations will be sold by the high school seniors, at khswaveriders.org or at the door.
Entertainment will be provided by the students and faculty with a featured guest appearance by Jamin Wong. Proceeds go to seniors who are accepted to post-graduate accredited programs or institutions and face financial hardships.

Afternoon at Hulihee slated for Feb. 16
The Daughters of Hawaii and Calabash Cousins present Afternoon at Hulihee on Sunday. The 4 p.m. event on the Hulihee Palace grounds remembers the late Princess Ruth Keelikolani.
The event presents the Merrie Monarchs and Hawaiian performing arts by kumu hula Etua Lopes and his Halau Na Pua Ui O Hawaii. Those attending should bring a beach mat or chair as seating won’t be provided.
Hulihee Palace is open for docent-guided and self-guided tours. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The palace also opens from 1 to 4 p.m. the Monday following the monthly Kokua Kailua Village Stroll. Palace admission ranges from $1 to $8. Docent-guided tours are available upon request.
