Waikoloa Canoe Club is offering a family-friendly event at Anaehoomalu Bay from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and March 2. Participants must be able to swim. Roller derby team holds golf fundraiser
The Echo City Knockouts roller derby team is holding a golf tournament fundraiser Saturday at Makalei Golf Club. Registration is set for 7:30 a.m. Cost is $100 per golfer, which includes greens fee, continental breakfast and lunch, 18 holes of golf and gift bags. There will be prizes.

Coaches discuss Waikola golf on Gail show
Shannon Walker (Waikoloa Beach Resort) and coaches John Fields (University of Texas) and Earl Tayima (UH-Hilo) analyze the Amer Ari Division I Intercollegiate Golf Tournament held recently at Kings’ Course on the Emily T Gail Show. Oklahoma State won the team and individual honors at one of the top intercollegiate golf events in the country.
Emily also has an update on the Bike Works Beach & Sport Lavaman Sunset Run on March 28 and community bike rides every Tuesday at 8:30 am.

High school rodeo kicks off
The Hawaii High School Rodeo at Paniolo Park in Waimea begins at 8 a.m. March 8-9 and continues the first weekend of April and May. Saturday is keiki and junior divisions; Sunday is the high school division. The state finals junior division is May 9-11 and high school division is June 12-15.
The competition is free, and donations are welcomed. There is food concession benefiting the program.

Kai Opua Canoe Club season begins
The Kai Opua Canoe Club has announced its 2014 start dates.
Girls (12-18): 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, starting March 10
Boys (12-18): 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting March 11
Novice “Y,” coed, and under-12: 3:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting March 25
Women: Novice A and B (new paddlers), 4:30 p.m. Mondays, starting March 10
Open and age divisions: 5:30 p.m. Mondays, starting March 31
Women’s team meeting: 5:30 p.m., March 28, at the Kai Opua Canoe Halau
Practices are at Kamakahonu Beach near King Kamehameha Hotel in Kailua-Kona. New paddlers must have copies of identifications, and paddlers under 18 need parental/guardian signatures.

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation is seeking water polo officials for the spring season. Experience is not required and officiating classes will be offered.

Big Island Running Company offers training
The Big Island Running Company is offering guided speed workouts concluding March 8 — the week of the Run For Hops 10K/5K.
The training cycle will coincide with group runs at 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each runner will be supplied with a training program of four scheduled runs.

Parks and Recreation has hoops league
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation is currently holding a basketball league for children ages 9 to 14. League play runs to March 13. Games are at 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays.
The league is looking for volunteer coaches and officials.
Registration forms are available between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.

Hawaii Cycling offers Lavaman training
The Hawaii Cycling Club will host free training time trials at 8 a.m. March 15 for participants training for Lavaman Waikoloa.
The Kua Bay time trial starts on Queen Kaahumanu Highway, just south of Waikoloa Beach Road. The course is 12.2 miles with challenging hills.

The Hawaii Racing Association is updating its membership list for 2014 to find out what types of motorsports Big Island residents are interested in having at a proposed Kona Motorsport Park.
The HRA’s website shows potential uses for a 250-acre park and offers an online survey.

‘Leprechaun-Sham’ run/walk
Kealakehe High School’s Waverider Triathlon Club will present the “5K Leprechaun-A-Thon & Sham-Walk” at 7 a.m. March 15 at Magic Sands Beach Park.
Fees are $15 through March 8; $18 thereafter. Race bib pickups will be from 6 to 6:40 a.m. There will be a prize drawing and refreshments after the run.
