Rotary Club plans St. Patrick’s Day party
The Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise will host its third annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. March 15 at the Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club at Honokohau Harbor.
The event will feature Jack and the Rippers performing and include a silent auction and door prizes. Kona Brewing Co. will provide beer; food will include traditional corned beef and cabbage catered by the Big Island Grill, plus a vegetarian entree, wine, pupu, dessert and Kona coffee. All money raised will support Rotary’s community projects.
Cost is $30 per person. Tickets can be purchased at Kona Wine Market, Queen K Tesoro and Kailua Candy Co.

Grow Hawaiian weekend held in Captain Cook
The 10th annual Grow Hawaiian Weekend will celebrate Hawaiian cultural and natural history Friday and Saturday at Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook. Admission to the garden and all activities are free.
Taro experts Jerry Konanui and Keahi Tomas will lead guests in poi pounding from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at the garden visitor center. Boards, stones and cooked taro will be available for everyone. A guided Hawaiian plant walk will be held at 1 p.m. Friday.
The Grow Hawaiian festival takes place from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the garden. Speakers will make presentations on taro cultivation, conservation, horticulture and lauhala weaving. The event will also include artisan demonstrations, hands-on activities for keiki and adults, plant and insect identification booths and Hawaiian food.

Modern Cosmology discussed at Imiloa
Simon Radford from Caltech Submillimeter Observatory will give an in-depth look at the composition of the universe during the “Modern Cosmology” talk at 7 p.m. Friday at Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo.
The Maunakea Skies program will be hosted by Imiloa staff member Chris Phillips. He will provide observational highlights of the current night sky. The planetarium presentations are held on the third Friday of each month. Purchase tickets at the Imiloa front desk or by phone at 969-9703.
Lecture examines Hawaiian naming practices
Hawaiian naming practices and environmental kinship that transforms spaces into personalized places will be explored in an upcoming lecture.
Katrina-Ann R. Kapaanaokalaokeola Nakoa Oliveira will present the free lecture, “Mai Kekahi Kapa a i Kekahi Kapa Aku: Environmental Kinship and Kanaka Naming Practices,” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Keauhou Ballroom III at Sheraton Kona Resort &Spa at Keauhou Bay.
Oliveira is the director of Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language and an associate professor of Hawaiian at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She holds a Ph.D. in geography.
