High school agricultural internship offered
A weeklong high school agricultural internship program will use the aina as a classroom from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 17 through 21. Applications are due Feb. 28.
Based at The Kohala Center’s Ka Hua Aina training farm in Honokaa, interns gain hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture and learn about island food systems. They will visit and work on farms along the Hamakua Coast and earn a stipend for their work. The program also includes field trips to processing facilities and wholesalers, and the opportunity to meet island and state agricultural leaders.

White wins HPA Shakespeare competition
Hawaii Preparatory Academy junior Miller White placed first in the school-level competition of the National Shakespeare Competition recently held at the Gates Performing Arts Center. The National Shakespeare Competition is a program of the English-Speaking Union of the United States.
Twenty-eight students in grades nine to 12 participated in the event, performing and reciting Shakespearean monologues and sonnets. Juniors Harmony Graziano and Eliana Kaplan placed second and third, respectively.
White performed as Malvolio from Act 2, Scene 5 of “Twelfth Night.” Graziano performed as Lady Macbeth from Act 1, Scene 5 of “Macbeth,” while Kaplan performed as Tamara from Act 2, Scene 2 “Titus Andronicus.”
Judging criteria included the performer’s understanding of the speech, including meaning, language and character, and the performer’s expression, vocal and physical communication, and ability to remain in character throughout the performance. Judges were upper school math teacher Kristine Dahlquist, upper school fine arts teacher Mollie Hustace and attorney, and former New York executive director of the Screen Actors Guild, John Sucke.
Credit union offers scholarships
Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union is accepting scholarship applications from Hawaii Island high school seniors.
The credit union will award $17,500 in scholarships to seniors headed on to an institution of higher learning. Six $2,500 scholarships are named after volunteers who made important contributions to the credit union. One scholarship is named after the HCFCU Student Credit Unions.
Five of the scholarships — Peter Hirata Scholarship, Albert Akana Scholarship, Katsumasa Tomita Scholarship, Frank Ishii Scholarship, and Mitsugi Inaba scholarship – are scholarships awarded to students based on need, academic achievement, career goals and extracurricular activities. The John Y. Iwane scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior who meets all the criteria with plans to enter an agriculture-related field of study. The $2,500 HCFCU Student Credit Union scholarship will be awarded to a senior who currently participates in an HCFCU sponsored student credit union as a teller or board member.
Any graduating high school senior attending a high school on the Island of Hawaii is eligible to apply. Each applicant must plan to attend a two- or four-year institute of higher learning.
Interested high school seniors may fill out an application online at the credit union’s website, hicommfcu.com. Applications and all required information must be received by April 7 to be considered.
HPM Building Supply offers scholarship
Scholarship applications are now available online for Hawaii Island high school seniors who are planning on attending any University of Hawaii institution. Students who apply will be eligible for a $1,000 scholarship from HPM Building Supply.
For more than 30 years, the annual Barney S. Fujimoto Scholarship has promoted academic achievement and excellence to Hawaii Island high school students.

Kahakai kindergarten registration open
Kahakai Elementary School is accepting kindergarten registration for 5-year-old children born before Aug. 1, 2009, who live in the Kahakai district. Address verification, such as a utility bill, rental agreement or letter from the landlord with a taxpayer identification number; current health records, including physical and immunizations; tuberculosis test results; and birth certificate are required at registration.
WHEA lists eighth-grade honor students
West Hawaii Explorations Academy, a public charter school located at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority, announces the names of eighth-graders on its first semester honor roll.

Kahakai council meeting Tuesday
Kahakai Elementary School Community Council will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the principal’s office. On the agenda is a review of the 2013-14 academic plan.
Academy hosting community fair
West Hawaii Explorations Academy will hold its annual Community Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at its campus, located just past the Wawaloli Beach Park restrooms at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority. The event is free.
Local entertainment, silent auction, fair-type games, party bouncer, country store, vendors and a food booth will be featured. The highlight of the fair is the award-winning Aloha Kai Tours of the sixth- through 12th-grade campus, showcasing student projects including deep sea projects, clown fish, a shark tank, touch tank and a reef tank.

Parker students present Disney’s ‘Aladdin Jr.’
Parker School presents the first-ever middle school play production class in Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.” featuring Conner Brown as Aladdin; Meira Bonnici as Jasmine, Luke Harper as the Genie, Gavin Cairns as the Sultan and Kaikea Mead as Jafar. The cast of sixth through eighth-graders who perform in this funny, musical comedy also assisted in choreography, costume, set and prop design and serve as lighting and sound technicians.
The show starts at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Parker School Theatre in Waimea. Tickets are available at the door and cost $5 for general admission. Children 5 and younger are free.
