Hoku Concert headliner announced
Frank Meyer, chairman of the 13th annual Hoku Concert Series, has announced that New York tenor Cody Austin will headline the private spring concert, “Bocelli and Groban’s Greatest Hits.” An April 11 show in Waimea benefits Kahilu Theatre; an April 12 performance in Kona benefits the Kona Hospital Foundation.

Coffee festival announces art contest
The 44th annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival has launched its annual festival art contest, one that illustrates the talents of Kona’s prolific art community. Artists are invited to submit original Kona coffee art for consideration. The winning entry will be showcased throughout the festival. Artwork should be evocative of Kona’s coffee heritage and integrate the festival’s 2014 theme: “Bringing Kona Together.”
The winning design will become the official image of the 2014 Kona Coffee Cultural Festival and will be featured on all official festival merchandise, including the festival button, event poster and retail merchandise. The winning design will also be featured on the festival’s magazine cover, website and other promotional materials.
Artists of traditional media including oil, acrylic, tempera, watercolor and illustrations, as well as computer graphics and photography are invited to participate. Typography should not be included within the art. There is no entry fee to participate and the competition is open to all Hawaii Island residents 18 and older.
By submitting artwork into this contest, the artist agrees to assign all ownership rights and copyright of the art to the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival.
Artwork submissions are due by April 1 and should be delivered to Malia Bolton at the Kona Coffee &Tea Co. location across from Honokohau Harbor on Queen Kaahumanu Highway or submitted electronically, with “Festival Submission” in the subject line, to maliabolton@gmail.com.
Donkey Mill hosts events, classes
Donkey Mill Arts Center, a project of the Holualoa Foundation for Arts and Culture, is offering the following classes and programs in March. For more information, call 322-3362 or visit donkeymillartcenter.org.
• March 1: “Playing with Light: Camera Obscura and Pinhole Cameras” meets with Laurel Schultz from 3 to 5 p.m. March 1 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 2. Students will build their own pinhole cameras and create unique photographic images with them. The fee is $75 for members and $85 for nonmembers.
• March 6: Brewers Paina Auction, 6 to 9 p.m. at the Sheraton Kona Resort &Spa at Keauhou Bay. The center is partnering with Kona Brewers Festival for the annual Brewers Paina Fundraiser. • March 8: Photography: Master Class meets from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is an intensive and intimate workshop with professional photographer Alvis Upitis. The workshop is limited to six students. The fee is $75 fo rmembers and $85 for nonmembers.
