Instructors sought for Parks and Rec classes

The county Department of Parks and Recreation is accepting applications from individuals interested in conducting instructional classes and workshops in West Hawaii.

Sought are instructors of specialties such as hula, folk dancing, yoga, cooking, arts and crafts and natural sciences. Recreation educators require a minimum of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of experience in the specialized activity to be taught.

The Co-Dependents Anonymous women’s meeting is scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday at Unity Church sanctuary, 75-5722 Hanama Place in Kailua-Kona.

Workshop on raising drug-free kids offered

Chris Kelly, founder of Prevention PLUS, will offer information about parenting drug-free kids during “Parenting for Prevention” at 6:30 p.m. Monday at North Kohala Public Library.

The program is for family members, teachers, coaches, and counselors of all children from elementary school to college age — not just those who are using drugs. It will provide practical information about trends in teenage substance use and abuse. Attendees will learn how to deter experimentation and how to detect and react if use does occur. Kelly will present the most up-to-date, science-based information to encourage healthy, sensible choices.

Investors gather Monday

Novice and experienced investors are invited to an investors meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Big Island Chabad Center in Pottery Terrace, Suite 323.

Ruderman discusses legislative priorities

Sen. Russell Ruderman will discuss state legislative priorities for 2014 and how they will affect the community from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Pahala Plantation House, located on Maile Street in Pahala. Information will be provided about participating directly in legislative process.

Light refreshments will be served.

Solomon holds community meetings

Sen. Malama Solomon will hold a series of legislative community meetings for residents of the 4th Senatorial District, which includes North Hilo, Hamakua, Kohala, Waimea, Waikoloa and North Kona. Community members may voice their concerns on issues affecting the district and state and share their priorities for the legislative session.

West Hawaii meetings are scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at Kohala Senior Center, 65-1291A Kawaihae Road in Waimea; 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at North Hawaii Education and Research Center, 45-539 Plumeria St. in Honokaa; and 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Waikoloa Elementary School cafeteria, 68-1730 Hooko St. in Waikoloa Village.
