Students present ‘Flowers for Algernon’
Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Ka Makani Players will present David Rogersʻ “Flowers for Algernon” at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at the school’s Gates Performing Arts Center in Waimea. Tickets, which only are available at the door, are $10 for adults and $5 for students.
“Flowers for Algernon” is based on the novel by Daniel Keyes. HPA theatre instructor Marina Tichotsky is the director, with set and lighting design by Jared Terpak.
This is the compelling story of Charlie, a man with a learning disability, and the strange interweaving of his life with that of Algernon, a mouse. Experimental surgery has been performed on Algernon increasing his intelligence fourfold. The operation is tried on Charlie, who rapidly changes to a genius, far more intelligent than his teacher, Alice Kinnian, or the doctors who created the operating technique. As Charlie approaches the peak of his brilliance, Algernon shows frightening symptoms of regression. The play becomes a race against time in which Charlie tries to keep his new intelligence long enough to save himself and thus continue what he and Alice have found.
The cast features Julian Sandulli as Charlie Gordon, Kimi Cantyne as Alice Kinnian, Churchill Crean as Professor Nemur, Curtis McMackin as Dr. Strauss, Colby Camero as Burt Sheldon, Wolfgang Brennan as Teenage Charlie and 16 supporting players.

Woods on dean’s list
Jeremiah Woods of Kailua-Kona, has made the dean’s list for the fall semester at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho.
To be eligible for the academic honor, a student must earn a 3.5 grade-point average while taking at least 12 graded credit hours of classes. The dean’s list includes 359 students from 17 states and two foreign countries.
Credit union accepting scholarship applications
HFS Federal Credit Union is accepting applications for its 2014 Scholarship Program. The credit union will award $2,500 scholarships to seven graduating Big Island high school seniors to help them pursue their goals of higher education. Students who meet the following qualifications are encouraged to apply.
• Current HFS Federal Credit Union member in good standing
• Current Big Island high school senior with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
• Will attend an accredited two- or four-year vocational or technical school, college or university full time in 2014-2015
• Financial need
Students may download an application at hfsfcu.org. Applications must be postmarked by March 29 to be considered.
Rotary accepting scholarship applications
The Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation is accepting applications from West Hawaii public and private high school seniors for three scholarships.
The $4,000 Jim and Sis Bedingfield Scholarship and the $8,000 Ken and Marge Clewett Scholarship are paid out in four annual installments.
Eligible students for either scholarship are generally those who would have difficulty continuing their education without some type of financial assistance. Candidates are evaluated in five areas: scholastic and academic achievement, leadership, personal involvement on campus, community service and activities, extracurricular activities, employment experience, and financial need.
The $1,000 Ron and Kathy Hawkes Vocational Scholarship is paid out in two annual installments. Students planning to attend a vocational or trade school are invited to apply for the scholarship.
Applications are available from any school guidance counselor or by contacting Peggy Peckham at 326-1101. The deadline for submitting applications is March 31.

Keauhou Canoe Club has scholarships
Keauhou Canoe Club is offering two $1,000 scholarships for graduating seniors from all West Hawaii high schools who have been members of a high school paddling team or community club-level paddling organization within the past 18 months.
An academic scholarship is open to any 2014 West Hawaii graduate with a grade point average of 2.9 or higher. Grade transcripts are required.
The second scholarship is the Mike Haines Memorial Merit Scholarship which will be granted to a graduating senior who has contributed to their paddling club or to his community at large through leadership, volunteerism and service.
Applicants can apply for only one Keauhou Canoe Club scholarship. The application deadline is March 31. Applications are available through the counselor’s office or paddling coaches at local high schools.

Hui Okinawa offers scholarships
Hui Okinawa is offering two $1,000 scholarships to students who plan to pursue higher education this fall.
One scholarship is for a high school graduate who plans to attend a two- or four-year educational institution for the first time in 2014. The second is for a college student continuing his education or a university graduate enrolling in graduate school in 2014.
Applicants must be graduates of an accredited high school or GED Program in the state of Hawaii. He or his parents or legal guardian must currently reside in Hawaii County. The applicant must have an awareness and appreciation of Okinawan culture.
Application forms are available at the counselor’s office of public, private and charter schools and adult community schools, as well as the University of Hawaii financial aid offices on Hawaii Island.
