Kealakehe is looking for cross-country and cheerleading coaches for the fall season.

High school rodeo at Paniolo Park

The Hawaii High School Rodeo at Paniolo Park in Waimea begins at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday and continues the first weekend of April and May. Saturday activities feature keiki and junior divisions; Sunday activities feature high school participants. The state finals junior division is May 9 to 11 and high school division is June 12 to 15.

The competition is free; donations are welcome. Food will be sold, with proceeds to benefit the program.

Honaunau Canoe Club new season

The Keoua Honaunau Canoe Club kicks off its paddling season in Honaunau on Saturday with the Louis Kelekolio Memorial Canoe Race, followed by lunch and membership meeting.

The race, for OC-1 and OC-2 canoes, starts at 9 a.m., with registration at 7:30 a.m. There will be 6-mile and 10-mile courses, with several age divisions.

Season practice begins at 3:30 p.m. Monday for keiki and 4:30 p.m. for adults.

Kai Opua Canoe Club start dates

The Kai Opua Canoe Club has announced its 2014 start dates.

Girls (12-18): 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, starting March 10

Boys (12-18): 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting March 11

Novice “Y,” coed, and under-12: 3:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting March 25

Women: Novice A and B (new paddlers), 4:30 p.m. Mondays, starting March 10; open and age divisions, 5:30 p.m. Mondays, starting March 31; team meeting: 5:30 p.m., March 28, at the Kai Opua Canoe Halau

Men: Novice B (new paddlers), 4:30 p.m., Tuesdays, starting March 25; Novice A, open and age divisions, 5:15 p.m. Tuesdays, starting April 1

Practices are at Kamakahonu Beach near King Kamehameha Hotel in Kailua-Kona. New paddlers must have copies of identifications, and paddlers under 18 need parental/guardian signatures.

Kawaihae Canoe Club youth program

The Kawaihae Canoe Club youth program, open to 11- to 18-year-olds, begins Monday.

The club holds practices at 3:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday at Kawaihae Harbor. A shuttle van picks up participants at 3 p.m. at Waimea Community Center, and returns them to the center at 5:30 p.m.

Canoe race at Kawaihae Surf Park

The Kohala Coast/Beanie Heen Memorial races will be at 9 a.m. March 29 at Kawaihae Surf Park. The races, for OC-1, OC-2 and SUP on short and long courses, start and end at the park. There will be a party and raffle after the races.

Waikoloa Canoe Club family event

Waikoloa Canoe Club is offering a family-friendly event at Anaehoomalu Bay from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday. Participants must be able to swim. Gold Coast Little League softball

Gold Coast Little League is accepting registration for girls ages 7 to 16 from Kona, Waikoloa, Waimea, Kohala, Honokaa, Paauilo and Laupahoehoe. Sign-ups are held from 6 to 8 p.m. every Friday at Waimea Park. The season fee is $65 per player.

Kona Coast Little League registration

Kona Coast Little League is accepting registrations for Minor (ages 9-10) and Major (11-12) divisions from players who reside in the area from Pottery Terrace to Manuka.

Waimea Cowboys football and cheer

Practices for the Waimea Cowboys football and cheer teams begin Tuesday at Waimea School field.

Registration is open to children ages 5 to 15. The fee to participate is $85.

The requirements to play are: a 2014 registration packet, current sports physical, original birth certificate, copy of medical insurance card (front and back), second quarter report card, and photo of the student-athlete. Practices are held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Kona Hongwanji Judo Club tournament

The Kona Hongwanji Judo Club will hold its 20th annual Oyama Invitational Judo Tournament at 9 a.m. March 16 at the Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium at Konawaena High School. The tournament is open to the public.

Kona horseshoe club spring league

The Kona Horseshoe Pitchers Club Spring League will start March 13. Membership is required for NHPA-sanctioned doubles play. Singles will be matched up when possible. The eight-week league costs $5 per week and is played from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at the Palm Court horseshoe pits at Old Kona Airport Park.

Everyone is welcome to casual play, 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays.

‘Leprechaun-Sham’ run/walk

Kealakehe High School’s Waverider Triathlon Club will present the “5K Leprechaun-A-Thon & Sham-Walk” at 7 a.m. March 15 at Magic Sands Beach Park.

Fees are $15 through March 8; $18 thereafter. Race bib pickups will be from 6 to 6:40 a.m. There will be a prize drawing and refreshments after the run.

Big Island Running Company offers training

The Big Island Running Company is offering guided speed workouts concluding March 8 — the week of the Run For Hops 10K/5K.

The training cycle will coincide with group runs at 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each runner will be supplied with a training program of four scheduled runs.

Hawaii Cycling offers Lavaman training

The Hawaii Cycling Club will host free training time trials at 8 a.m. March 15 for participants training for Lavaman Waikoloa.

The Kua Bay time trial starts on Queen Kaahumanu Highway, just south of Waikoloa Beach Road. The course is 12.2 miles with challenging hills.

The Hawaii Racing Association is updating its membership list for 2014 to find out what types of motor sports Big Island residents are interested in having at a proposed Kona Motorsport Park.

The HRA’s website shows potential uses for a 250-acre park and offers an online survey.

Workshop on coaching

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Positive Coaching Alliance offer “Double-Goal Coach: Coaching the Mental Game” from 6 to 8 p.m. March 18 at the Makaeo Events Pavilion at Old Kona Airport Park.
