March is American Red Cross month
The American Red Cross invites everyone to take part in its mission of saving lives and giving hope to those in need during Red Cross Month in March.
The organization is holding an online benefit auction until March 12. Bid on travel, entertainment packages and art pieces at redcross.org/hawaii. TO make a donation online, call 739-8133 or send a check to the American Red Cross, Hawaii State Chapter, 55 Ululani Street, Hilo, HI 96720.
The Red Cross also offers courses that teach life-saving skills such as adult and pediatric first aid and CPR, nurse aide training and babysitting training. Online courses are designed for those who are short on time. Register at redcross.org/take-a-class or call 800-733-2767.

Hawaii families are encouraged to be prepared for disaster, create a disaster plan and a disaster kit. First aid, hurricane and other mobile apps provide instant lifesaving information in times of emergency and can be downloaded at redcross.org/prepare/mobile-apps.
Clubs host three days of sailing for youth
Kona Sailing Club Juniors and the Big Island Sailing Foundation will host three days of sailing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 19 through 21 out of Honokohau Harbor.
New sailors should be 12 years or older and sailors with previous experience should be older than 10. Participants must be Kona Sailing Club members. Membership is $20 for the first year and $10 per year for renewals. Cost for the three days of sailing is $60.
Sailing will be done on boats between 12 and 22 feet long. Instructors are certified by U.S. Sailing. Participants should pack a lunch, snacks and plenty to drink and must be able to swim and be comfortable on the water.

Historical society fetes Fat Tuesday with bread bake
The Kona Historical Society will hold a special bread bake to celebrate Fat Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday, March 4.
The society will make their long-awaited cinnamon bread and country bread that has a crunchy crust with plenty of garlic. Bread will be available for purchase from noon until it sells out. Kona Historical Society is located at 81-6551 Mamalahoa Highway mile marker 112.
