Free family read aloud program offered
Friends of the Libraries, Kona will host a free family read aloud program, “Books are Building Blocks,” Tuesday at Kailua-Kona Public Library.
The class will travel to turn-of-the century Russia this month, and see it through the eyes of actors from the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” from the Aloha Theatre.
The program is offered on the first Tuesday of each month of the school year. Parents must attend the event with their children. Registration will take place from 4:30 to 5 p.m. in front of the library, the program is from 5 to 5:30 p.m. and reading by age group is from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Participation is limited to 75.

Words and Wine scheduled Tuesday
Two island authors and one traveling author will be featured at the Kona Stories Book Shop monthly Words and Wine event from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Keauhou Shopping Center.
Attendees to the free event will meet authors Angela Sherwood and Virginia Fortner and traveling author Gerald Stimmler, while enjoying pupu and wine.
Sherwood will present “Virgin is Trinity,” the fictional sequel to her 2012 book in which character Charlie Meadows is the most famous virgin in town trying to decide on a partner.
Fortner will read an excerpt from her first published novel.
Stimmler will also present her first book, “Dropped Dead in Kona,” a fictional work that begins when characters Joe and Margie stumble on a woman’s body lying on a fairway adjacent to their home.

Fishpond restoration meeting planned
A proposed statewide general permit process could make it easier to navigate the regulatory path for restoration of traditional fishpond systems in Hawaii. Statewide public hearings on this proposed process are being held to gather input.
Known as Hoala Loko Ia, this consolidated process would provide cultural practitioners with a single application and permit, processed by the Department of Land and Natural Resources Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands. This streamlined permit will encompass the five potential permits that are currently required.
A public hearing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center. Copies of the application will be available for inspection at dlnr.hawaii.gov/occl/special-projects and at Kailua-Kona Public Library.
Upon completion of the review process, the application will be presented to the Board of Land and Natural Resources for its consideration.
